Interesting things come in jahs: Jah People. Jah Rule. Jar Jar Binks. And into this mix comes Jah Bar, an oasis off the main drag in Manly.
Cool and mysteriously inviting, the shadowy shop front and interior gives way to a surprisingly bright and spacious courtyard at the back. The tapas dishes are tasty, affordable and delivered by service that scores an A for awesome.
Safety Wolf is the restaurant equivalent of black jeans. I'm talking Yul Brynner circa THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN black jeans - the kind that hold their own in a saloon, or a gunfight.
I can imagine Yul pulling up a chair at one of the wooden tables at Safety Wolf. Dusty and thirsty, he'd order an El Diablo (Herradura Silver tequila, Chambord, lime juice and ginger beer), empanadas (tomato and cheese stuffed pastries) and maybe some rough-hewn potato wedges with his hat pulled down low over his face.
Smiggle? Fwiggle. Real paper junkies appreciate the finer things in life, like Paper Owl Pirate party invites, French colouring books and Hootie sketchbooks thick enough to contain years of crap poetry.
Say Happy Owlidays on a wood card or lift your Kris Kringle rating with rubber bands. Like the wardrobe to Narnia, within Pulp's four walls exists a secret world of papery delights you'll never want to leave.
Let's face it: finding stinky stuff for guys (and for yourself, if you're a guy) that doesn't well, stink, is hard work. But the alternative is simply not an option (remember tumbling out of the lift gasping for air after holding your breath all the way to level 5 while standing behind Matt from Accounts?).
Pssst! Amigo! Want to tell a good Spanish restaurant from a crappy one? Look up. Now count the hunks of cured meat hanging from the ceiling. Sure, a few lend an air of authenticity, but you know you're in for a treat when you walk into DELICADO - Spanish providore, restaurant and wine bar - and discover the roof is a riot of dangling chillis, retro flamenco posters, dusty wine bottles and ripening Jamón Iberico.
Sunset. Blankets. Holidays. Heartbreak. Conor O'Brien's images are warm like your towel after a swim; silent like eye contact across the room; awkward like your fumbled first kiss.
Been here before? Sure, Sophia Coppola, Stephenie Meyer and even Bonds have been milking the aching beauty and banality of adolescence for years.
Few spaces capture the awkward loneliness of life like the Darren Knight Gallery. Whether displaying works by Noel McKenna, Rob McHaffie or Michael Harrison, the sparse, fragile aesthetic perfectly conveys the ups, downs and utter emptiness of city living. Surprisingly though, the gallery's next show by artist Robert Rooney offers something completely different.
