"The impression that a dark movie theatre gives you is that you're furtive and safe and tucked away in a cognitive kangaroo pouch."
Masha Tupitsyn's debut novel, BEAUTY TALK & MONSTERS, is a collection of stories as influenced by the author's familiarity with film theory as it is by the punk fiction of Kathy Acker and the films of Brian De Palma.
As per usual, this week TwoThousand has chosen the easy way out. Meaning what exactly? Well, because typing a proper street address into our SHOP section is too time consuming, we've decided to feature a website.
But rest assured, it's a good ‘un. Ozdesigner.com is an online store that features the best young-ish Australian and New Zealand designers.
The story of Deerhoof is a long and complex one. Punctuated by band members leaving and angels arriving (Satomi – singer), audiences have nevertheless expanded as word about the wonderful complexity and energy of the Deerhoof sound has spread.
The title of their new album ‘Friend Opportunity’ is fitting as it could be described as an extended hand, a welcoming for those that may have considered Deerhoof ‘too “noise” for “pop”’.
Some artists and their releases are easy to write about but Cornelius, and his latest release Sensuous, is not one of them. With so many things taking place both simultaneously and separately, the sounds contained within this album are innovative to the purist and mysterious to the novice. Experimental elements surround pop structures like seagulls surround a chip, biting through it while squawking occasionally to get attention.
’High Fidelity’ has nothing on Music Recommenders. Combining forty leading independent record stores from around the world it pools their collective knowledge to make sure your mix tapes always get you laid.
‘The Recommenders’ include Brett Grossman and Brian Smith from Reckless Records (Chicago), Tatsuya Yuki from Mona Records (Tokyo) and Sascha and Torsten from Hard Wax (Berlin) so from hip hop, indie rock, jazz and Asian pop you will never be without something wonderfully obscure to ask for at a record store.
Softlightes are one of those bands that can both ease your pain and fuel your imagination. Perhaps that is why the film clip by Kris Moyes seems so perfectly suited to the band’s sound. Their music, all at once colourful and textured, verges on the point of too cute but pulls back at the right time to give you something that is carefully constructed rather than contrived.
Let’s face it, most magazines write about their friends anyway, so treat this not so much as a review but as a congratulations to The Temper Trap for releasing a brilliant new EP. Take it with a pinch of salt if you need to, but either way, just take it.
Their sound is both electric and hypnotising, with vocals that pull heart strings and bass lines that break guitar strings.
