Heartbroken Tennesee bluesman Lazarus (Samuel L. Jackson) finds a panty-clad nymphomaniac (Christina Ricci) left for dead in his driveway. He takes her in, chains her to the radiator and – Bible in hand - attempts to save her soul. Such is the wild premise of this outlandish slice of Southern pulp gothic, served up on a 70’s-referencing blaxploitation platter for our viewing pleasure.
Michael Apted (THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH) is a no-nonsense storyteller unencumbered by subtlety. And the life of William Wilberforce, a British MP who fought tooth and nail to end slavery in the late 18th century, makes for a dull, solemn period drama.
Heavy-handed symbolism and teary-eyed sentimentality add up to an earnest, slightly condescending lecture tinged by post-colonial guilt.
Gifted Brit Sean Ellis successfully expands his 2004 oscar-nominated short into a playful indie feature. Art student Ben Willis fights an insomnia-inducing break-up by working the graveyard shift at the local supermarket. For this team of rejects and pranksters, fighting boredom in the aisles is a question of survival.
