The Lighthouse

27th Nov 08
Product: Art
Anatomy: Heart

For many of us, work experience at high school was a nerve racking, rude awakening to the disintegration of joy and magic as we knew it.

Not for Steve Frizza from The Lighthouse, who chose to work in the dark of a professional photo lab, learning to mix and pour light with fantastic potions and papers.

Manly Boat and Kayak Hire

20th Nov 08
Ambience: Outdoor
Difficulty: Exertion will pay off

Where did the Solo Man go? He sure was great in the nineties. Kayaking down mudslides in forests (why?), and slamming drinks down fast, what a hero, what a man. Most of us aren't Solo Man or Solo Woman. The crew at Manly Kayaks know this. They know that we prefer kayaking on a protected harbour with a group of friends, not scraping our lonely selves through whitewater, and we'd rather not slam our summer drinks down too quickly.

Sven's Viking Pizza

5th Nov 08
Venue: Restaurant
Meal: Dinner

When people steal from us we somehow conjure up images of what they look like. My ancestors invented stories about murderous horned Vikings who ‘stole' their woman and sheep. Truth is, my ancestors were probably ugly, dank druids and their woman willingly left with the Swedes, because they looked better and simply did things better.

3D Drawing Pad

Product: Objects
Theft: Theft is a risk

RB: Can we write a 3D review within a 2D template?

NS: We aren't writing in 3D. We're just reviewing the 3D experience, in 2D...hmm.

RB: But will people be able to get a feel for the experience? I mean, reading this now, everyone is probably going "ho hum". But if they were wearing the glasses and I was writing this on a 3D drawing pad, they would be like "HOLY CRAP.

L'Olioteca

16th Apr 08
Venue: Restaurant
Meal: All day

‘L'Olioteca' ~ The ‘olive oil library'. At least that's what I think it means. Well, it sounds like ‘biblioteca', and that means ‘library' in Spanish. But these guys aren't Spanish, they're Italian and the truth is that I don't really know what I'm talking about. Likewise, I don't really know what I am talking about with wine tasting, or for that matter olive oil tasting.

Javier Bardem recently won 'Best Supporting Actor' at the Oscars and thanked his mother in Spanish. This week the Sydney Latin American Film Festival will also make you thank your mother. You'll thank her for birthing you into an interesting, troubled and equally beautiful world. The SLAFF films from all over the Latin America (not just Mexico and Argentina) will also have you thanking other people's mothers for giving birth to the line-up of incredible, independent and passionate film makers.

Rosie's

19th Dec 07
Venue: Café
Meal: Coffee

If you get a green light on Cleveland at Elizabeth Street, Rosie’s will appear but a piglet-pink blur as you drive past. If you get a red light, you might notice it looks like a giant has dropped a cupcake in between the fridge and the wall. The hole-in-the-wall coffee and cake outlet is the ultimate ‘in between’ space.
