BATS. is a Brisbane based zine made by a collection of girls with an average age of 16.6 years. They might be collectively underage, but what they lack in adulthood they make up for in attitude and street-sense. In fact, being 18 never made anyone any smarter or for that matter, cooler. BATS. is satirical, it's dark, it's original and it truly hits the nail on the head when it comes to a triumphant first-issue-zine.
Tom Hall is a Brisbane based artist whose practice involves explorations into place, space and time. So you’re thinking, well that makes me an artist too right? I’m always looking around the place, running late, being very aware of my personal space on public transport. The difference between your awareness of your surroundings and Tom’s - is that he turns his into compositional installations and manages to tell a story through the use of sounds and images (and you were lost at figuring out how to turn your bus tickets into art).
Little Brother, alongside fellow New Zealanders Zambesi and Nom*D, are masters of understated sophistication. Their spring/summer 06/07 range is militaristic in style and musical in name with Pitch Jackets, Piccolo Pants, and Chorus Shirts (to name a few) that play with checks, stripes and formal wear details.
Romance Was Born is one of those labels that refuses to be pigeon-holed. Despite its acid-trip design tendencies (like boggle-eyed Dunlops and kaleidoscope leggings) the label's catwalk debut was in a Sydney pub and its one of its first window installations was a hyper colour ode to Australia at Capital L.
We wouldn’t normally do this, but it seems that everyone is getting all jet-set these days. So although we may be stuck here for while if you get the chance to get to Melbourne don’t forget to checkout the world-class (yes we said world-class) cinema on the top of the iconic Curtin House, home of PAM’s Someday Store and Gallery, and Cookie (Australian Bar of the Year 2006).
If you are sick of your pecks ‘voting for Pedro' then Via Alley has a solution.
Graniph is based in Japan, but collaborates with artists all over the world to create original, limited edition tees. Yke Schotten, Fumi Nakamura and Paul Willoughby are just a few designers to work with the label, which has stayed solely in Japan until now.
With all the film festivals coming through Sydney at the moment, from last week's feature Hola Mexico Film Festival, to this week's Japanese Film Festival and the Canadian Film Festival next week, there is seemingly little need to travel.
The Japanese Film Festival celebrates the diversity of a country with arich cinematic tradition.
