Across from The Courthouse in Newtown, Black Star Pastry is a little slice of Portland-meets-Paris charm.
Its rustic woodsy look, DIY aesthetic (hand printed bags, wood panelling) and super good coffee are pure Portland; then there's those petite, delicately-crafted pastries and chockies to nibble on 'til your French woman gets fat.
Owner Christopher The, trained with legends George and Lorraine at sixseveate; now he and his wife sell Victoire bread, homemade jams, and their own goodies here.
Choose carefully; we were kinda non-plussed with their canelé (which others swear by). But we were super plussed with their chocolate-coated gingerbread ninjas (which are totally adorable), and that chocolate éclair. It cracks like an egg in your mouth, oozing rich chocolate yoke down your throat.
Just off the hustle and bustle of King Street, it's a perfect spot to catch your breath during an afternoon in Newtown.
Location: Inner West

TwoThousand is a subcultural guide to Sydney, published daily and fired by email weekly. It is compiled by an amorphous gaggle of Sydney writers, stylists, designers and photographers who all like huddling under that big umbrella we like to call creativity. Without editorial independence TwoThousand has nothing. All editorial you read is featured because it's worth it - not because it's paid for.
