Choosing between Bar Mattino and Café Giulia is like choosing between The Beatles and The Stones, chocolate and vanilla, Jesus and Buddha. Each is awesome in its own way.
Bar Mattino is a small café serving up "modern British" fare that's seriously huge, seriously yummy, and seriously inexpensive. You can hoe into a huge bowl of homemade granola with poached fruit, awesome omelettes, and British classics like Welsh rarebit, a chip butty, or their ever-popular Sunday roast - and two can dine easily for under $30.
Café Giulia has similarly incredible meals for incredibly little money, but is larger and buzzing. Set in an old butcher shop, the interior has a NYC-diner
vibe, with a long countertop and views out the front to Chippendale's beautiful old warehouse district. Their chalkboard menu is enormous; recommendations go to their great mixed juices, grilled mushrooms, and anything with the word "haloumi" in it. With heaps of choices hovering just over $5, they drive a breakfast bargain that's tough to beat.
These two neighbours have created a tasty oasis along a desolate stretch of Abercrombie Street that draws hordes of Chippendale's feral art students, loft dwelling sophisticates, and office workers alike. So how to pick? Simple. Eeny, meeny, miny...
