Once, when we were but young striplings, full of big ideas and insatiable lusts for seafood indulgences, we happened upon a tiny provincial backwater called the Sydney Fish Market.
When there, amongst the stalls hosting armadas of freshly slain crustacheai, we were privy to a battle of epic proportions. Venturing from the oft-treaded tourist trail and down a grimy alley between the teeming piles of fishheads and eel stews, we came upon a ring fight, the pitting of an explosive Hawkesbury River freshwater Oyeter against a punchy little Moreton Bay Bug was a sight to behold.
The clamorous din of the mongers as they placed their bets with the ringmaster, the slippery grit of crushed shell underfoot and the faint aroma of opiates hanging in the air all made for a heady atmosphere of adventure, decadence and seafood gluttony and we could swear that we saw the ghost of Papa Hemingway slugging back a fine brew and shoving a fistful of dollars into a slimy little chap's waiting hand.
