Like most art school dropouts with little money, I used to regularly eat at a Chinese noodle joint and ignore the stylish, modern Japanese noodle bar next door. What a fool I, like so many art school dropouts before me, had been!
Menya have three kinds of noodle soup on offer - ramen, udon and soba. I played it safe a few times and had the udon karage chicken, then moved to soba noodles, which I live on now. I once tried the ramen (the soup is made from pork bones) and it was like drinking a pig so I haven't gone near that shit since.
Anyway, the soba noodles are amazing, super filling and you don't feel too gross if you eat too much, which is what I do at every meal. A small entree of sashimi is essential too. Plus they sell this lemonade that you have to open by pushing a glass marble into the bottle. It's amazing to watch someone trying to open the bottle without instructions.
