Unlike Melbourne, we in Sydney are not yet accustomed to gallivanting around filthy back alleys to access bars and restaurants. So as you lead your date down a dodgy little unnamed alley off Pitt Street, have some fun and casually describe IRREVERSIBLE as the sexiest movie you've ever seen and just as they're about to leg it - hit them with the choice of not one but two Korean BBQ restaurants.
Both possess pros of equal potency: one has an alfresco dining area which helps to ventilate the smoky BBQs while the other has a borderline offensive interpretation of the Harbour Bridge. It's finished with fairy lights and topped with an Australian flag, except it's teamed with a Korean flag instead of the NSW one.
Korean BBQ is the Jamberoo Recreation Park of dining experiences as it is you that controls the action. Cook an array of tastily marinated meats and seafood at your table, mix it with an assortment of sauces and sides like kimchi then wash it down with plenty of soju. The tables are equipped with buttons that remotely administer electric shocks to the staff ensuring prompt service. When ordering, don't be afraid to try new things and definitely get the tongue. Tongue = yum.
Another tip: order the 'hagfish' and look it up on Wikipedia when you get home.
It may seem like a novelty eating experience but to the Koreans, it's a way of life. That remarked, it's a lot of fun and if that date of yours is thin on conversation, you have a meal that's both delicious and distracting. If only you had a Korean BBQ next to your bed for those awkward post-coital moments:
"Oh baby that was great! Want some tongue?"
