Considering that they never answer their phone, aren't listed in the white pages, have one of the least visible locations ever, and are closed for much of the afternoon, you would expect Origami to be completely empty. Fortunately the fast, cheap, and delicious food has attracted many loyal customers in the short(-ish) time that it's been around.
Located across the street from an abandoned quarry and overlooking scenic Surry Hills Police Station, aesthetically, Origami isn't les Ritz Carlton. This extends to the décor, which seems to include high-school desks as dining tables.
Regardless, the shy but lovely staff are, like the cast of Eastenders, "rich in spirit", and the menus are great (if a bit dog-eared). The delicious Teri-yaki Chicken ($6) comes with a generous amount of rice and salad, while the Chicken Katsu Curry ($10) is enormous and authentically prepared. The Special Box ($12) includes generous portions of sushi, sashimi, teri-yaki chicken, salad, miso soup, and rice, and for desert, try the Black Sesame Ice Cream ($3). Even TwoThousand doesn't quite understand their opening hours, but show up at the right time and you're in for a treat.
