There is a lot to be said for ‘above awning retail’. This is because, for one, there is always a view. And for two, traversing a flight of stairs brings a strange sense of anticipation - a feeling that you’ve stumbled on something before the rest of the world.

Above the Hopetoun Hotel, Rider serves out Mexican fare from an old English kitchen. As music wafts up from below, you recline on a couch with a cold Pacifico and a mex feast. Beef burritos, fish tacos and buoyant salads are all well represented in flavour and girth. Thank goodness steps are also conducive to appetite.*

*This isn’t proven, but we suspect it is true.
