Sydney restaurants love flashing shiny water views and tarted-up interiors, but Tsukasa offers a relaxed, slightly grungy alternative. Tucked away below street level on Crown, its underground setting initially seems a stark contrast to some of the swankier joints in Slurry, but foodies take note: the basic interior belies a consummate Japanese menu that's tsu good to refuse.
Upon entry TwoThousand recommends grabbing a bottle of Yebisu and settling in at the counter (the best position to watch the fugu - poisonous blowfish - fly). The menu pulls no punches and you'll find all your sushi, gyoza and tempura favourites well represented. But the Archibald has to go to the sashimi that's delivered with a spread-eagled catch of the day artfully draped over hearty slabs of tuna, salmon, mackerel and flathead.
Japanese service is always impeccable and Tsukasa is no different. However the personable waiters seem chattier than most and, in between dishes, candidly confirmed our questions regarding various Japanese myths (dirty panty vending machines, professional train gropers, etc). So there you have it: TwoThousand has unearthed a Sydney restaurant that's more interested in the food than the scenery. Poseurs beware...
