Rumour has it that way back in the 1980's Uchi Lounge served as a one stop shop for Japanese business men wanting to indulge in the delights of Sydney while maintaining the culinary comforts of home. High-class ladies of leisure dripped in Dior made conversation, and afterwards did some dark deals to a Coltrane soundtrack.
Now that Jazz is dead and high-class means going from smack to blow, Uchi Lounge has rolled with the punches. With linen sheaths separating the cool
from the cooler, peacock-voodoo wall hangings and portions that wouldn't satisfy Nicole Richie, Uchi is über. The food is traditional but creative. Chunky grilled vegetables brushed with miso and basil is a favourite. Grilled eggplant with chicken wrapped in seaweed is also worth investigation. And if it's on the specials menu, the tuna seared in olive tapenade is compulsory. Uchi takes no bookings so appetize yourself at the bar downstairs while you wait.
