Having been furnished with my bountiful trust fund moneys, I thought it would be a good time to visit the Bentley factory in Crewe, which has been keeping snooty folk on the go since 1946. In commemoration of Crewe's Diamond Jubilee, Bentley has released a limited Diamond series model of the Continental GT coupe (only 400 cars have been made available for distribution),which the jury of the respected L'Automobile piu Bella del Mondo referred to as "de mossta bewdifulla carra inna de worlda" at its 2003 inauguration.
The Diamond Series GT features new 20-inch, 14-spoke alloy wheels and a production-first for Bentley: carbon ceramic brakes. Those with a tendency to plummet into bushes or a parked truck will consider this manna from heaven.
The Diamond Series is powered by a 12 cylinder, 6-litre twin-turbo charged W12engine, which can get you to 100km/h in 4.8 seconds and has an official top speed of 318 km/h. The driving experience is further enhanced by the automatic air suspension that monitors and adjusts ride height according to road conditions - especially helpful when under the influence.
Quilted (as opposed to the plebeian straight-fluted) leather seats, quilted door casings, a leather and chrome sports gear lever, and choice of either dark stained walnut or piano black wood accents makes for the kind of interior majesty that can only be appreciated without the barrier of pants.
