As Gert Jonkers (of Fantastic Man and BUTT) says in his introduction to Pretty Telling I Suppose, Sam Hodge's photography has an honest and candid quality about it that's not easy to come by.
His photographs offer fragmented memories of his daily life, including unmade beds, hysteric laughs, erections, peeling sunburn, ex-lovers and everything in between. You never know when he's going to whip out his 1967 Nikkormat and fire a few shots (especially if you're dancing in the bush with a rug over your face like me, page 30). And for this reason, the beautifully considered composition of every photo is always a surprise, while their quality of spontaneity is to be expected.
Ever the antithesis of the precious, self-important artist, when Rob and Sinisa from Rainoff told Sam they wanted to publish a book of his work, he handed over literally thousands of images and left it entirely in their hands to curate the compilation. As such, the beautifully designed hard cover book, which launched last night, is as much a feat of the editors as of the artist - and your deprived coffee table is crying out for one.

TwoThousand is a subcultural guide to Sydney, published daily and fired by email weekly. It is compiled by an amorphous gaggle of Sydney writers, stylists, designers and photographers who all like huddling under that big umbrella we like to call creativity. Without editorial independence TwoThousand has nothing. All editorial you read is featured because it's worth it - not because it's paid for.
