Once when I was a Christian I found myself standing in a church pew behind an old lady who released a neat little fart. It was mid-hymn so no one except me and her knew what had passed. Like a pro, the lady gave no physical acknowledgement of her brazen act, and I remember thinking at the time how impressed I was with her nonchalance.
Like that sneaky pop off, a sound can inject a moment of humour, pathos, pride, fear or dread into everyday life. Makers of the new Sound Machine know this and have created a device that enables users to release sounds into the world at will, fart-like, without the stench. The Sound Machine comes in a nifty plastic box (like my beloved Buddha Machine II) and its grid of buttons enables one to make sixteen different sounds, including a burst of laughter, a round of applause and a woof whistle.
When creator Shed Simove said that the Sound Machine lets you to "live your own sitcom", I immediately thought of the little David Brents living in all of us, sneaking up to Judy in accounts and letting off the 'pump-action shotgun loading and firing' sound. It's no real-time fart, but it's the next best thing.

TwoThousand is a subcultural guide to Sydney, published daily and fired by email weekly. It is compiled by an amorphous gaggle of Sydney writers, stylists, designers and photographers who all like huddling under that big umbrella we like to call creativity. Without editorial independence TwoThousand has nothing. All editorial you read is featured because it's worth it - not because it's paid for.
