The 80s have more to answer for than shoulder pads, big hair and the Gordon Gecko mentality. Tottering through the decade of conspicuous consumption in Xavier Danaud heels, has resulted in some of us now carrying injuries that would make a footballer blanch.
The resulting wear-and-tear sees the over-50 set now staggering around, even when sober, for reasons unrelated to shoe height. Painful joint conditions have sufferers reaching for a mobility aid, otherwise known as a walking stick. And, please God, not one that looks like grandpa's. In fact, possibly one to colour co-ordinate with my iPod.
Switch Sticks is a UK outfit that supplies walking sticks in a range of plain colours, including a smart black matte for the ageing Emo, elegant stripes (for the Lady Sonia McMahon look), and patterns that might be called funky if they weren't on a walking stick.
The sticks are height-adjustable, collapsible, so that they fold and fit into a bag that can be placed under one's seat at the opera, and come with a range of colour co-ordinated wrist straps and other accessories. Hiking sticks for the more ablebodied are also available in a similar range of colours and patterns.
Remember, Mother's Day is Sunday May 10.
