As a label, The Cassette Society has its roots in the grind, krump, club and strut of modern dance. It's not about tap shoes and jazz hands, but tearing up both the dance floor and the city.
Cassetty (as it is lovingly referred to by creator Katie Boyd) started with a small grant from a sportswear company, a slew of party pics and a stint at the Broadway Dance headquarters. From there it evolved into a collection of music-inspired pieces, louder than an underground rave and more comfortable than a beanbag after a five-night bender.
The label's latest ‘Revenge of The Robots' collection, which debuted at last month's fashion week, has moved its original toe-grinding dance into space. The street sport aspect is still there, but so is a zappy 'Cyber Doodle' and 'Space Animale' (with Roarie the friendly lion) on printed bodysuits and tee dresses. What may be a natural step for Cassetty, is actually a giant leap for its designer, whose first ever piece was a ‘peppermint industrial mesh slash glittered denim dress', curb the drool.
