Though internationally renowned for club music, Baltimore's been spawning some weird, cool, arty bands lately. Dan Deacon's SPIDERMAN OF THE RINGS and Celebration's MODERN TRIBE were two of last year's best, proving Baltimore's got more kinky fruitcakes than a John Waters flick.
Another innovative, intriguing, and down-right weird Baltimore denizen is Cass McCombs. His starry-eyed soft rock has hints of folk and country. His songs meander and change gears like oddball songsmiths Richard Davies, or Kurt Heasley. His lyrics are funny, silly and strange. In a way, he's kinda uncategorisable. Is that even a word? See? I have to make up words for this review. Now THAT's innovation.
McCombs shrilly, swooning yarbling vocals border on affectation, and at times try the patience. But his undeniable talent and uncommon originality are easy to applaud.
