"Space country" is such a strange concoction. Thank The Byrds for having the audacity to pair Graham Parsons with the space jams of Can.

Stranger still is hearing a group of young Sydney-siders carry on their tradition. There must be a hint of irony in The Woods Themselves' album title, (C'MON) DO THE BEACH THING, as this is an album definitely more suited to the backwoods - or the city - than the surf.

Mixing low-fi fuzz with country-ish mellow rock tunes, The Woods Themselves employ all manner of saxophones, trumpets, organs, slide guitar, and vocal harmonies to conjure up everyone from Wilco and Neil Young to Galaxie 500 or Beachwood Sparks.

Cynics could call this sleepy, but they'd be missing out. This subtle album has a terrific ebb and flow from start to finish, lined with hidden treasures all the way. Keep on (space) truckin'...
