When we talk about 'trends', it's often 'disturbing' trends, 'alarming' trends, or 'dangerous' trends. Why can't we appreciate 'good' trends?
I'm trying to do that lately. Like I'm appreciating how it's finally trendy to make good, normal blue jeans - without all the frayed shit, words-on-ass or fake wear marks. I'm also loving the great hairstyles men are sporting - after the abominable ironic mullet and ubiquitous faux-hawk.
I'm also revelling in the current trend of Australian post-punk bands evolving into shoegaze bands. Like Lost Valentinos, Mercy Arms, or the gobsmacking gossamer shimmer of Sydney three-piece Here Knows When.
Here Knows When make a glorious noise on their new EP, Fall Back Fall; abrasive, melodic washes of sound similar to contemporaries Monoland, Deerhunter, or of course the My Bloody Valentine song after whom they are probably named.
It's a move away from their equally capable yet more routine early post-punk sound. Fall Back Fall is as ambitious and enticing as it is accomplished. Can't wait to see what they do next.
