What spells indie cred? New Wave influences? Edgy haircuts? 80s fashions? If so, Rihanna and Kelis seem to be dripping with Crown Street currency on the backs of their latest releases.
Fresh from bringing all the boys to the yard, Kelis will soon release her new album KELLIS WAS HERE. In the meantime, Kelis reminds us in first single 'Bossy' that she's the "chick that raise the stake" and is "back with
an 808". Kelis has always been way ahead of the R&B princess pack and the new album, featuring collaborations with Too $hort and hubby Nas and production by Scott Storch and Linda Perry, will hopefully put her back on top. Let’s just hope that when she tours this time she’s learnt her lyrics.
Meanwhile, sent to earth to make us feel old and lazy, 18 year old Rihanna gives us A GIRL LIKE ME. Today, nothing is more 'now' than 'then', so current hit 'S.O.S.' 's well timed Soft Cell sample puts Rihanna in credible company. Predictably, the rest of the album is less interesting, with 'Unfaithful' and 'Dem Haters' being the better tracks.
Considering their new found hipster appeal, don’t be surprised to hear these lovely ladies name dropping The Stooges and Morrissey in coming months.
