I am an embarrassingly huge fan of Jim O'Rourke's solo work, I think HALFWAY TO A THREEWAY and EUREKA are probably some of the most played records in my collection. Most will know him from his time spent in The Red Krayola, Sonic Youth and Loose Fur, but he has remained incredibly prolific outside those bands; quite literarily involved in hundreds of recordings.
Now based in Tokyo, he has shifted his focus to film direction. Though apparently still playing every weekend with local noise deities, his music releases have become slightly more sporadic. LONG NIGHT is his most recent release with the material dating back to the ‘90s. The double album runs for almost two and a half hours and displays his ongoing interest in experimental ambient drone and concepts of musique-concrète. Both pieces give time a wonderful sort of elasticity and reveal themselves in their subtleties slowly. It is a record you have to be willing to invest some time in. An album that is arguably one of the better works the genre has seen for sometime, one perfect to fall asleep to.
