So Mercy Arms have always been OK - they've been around for a while and they've scored some nice supports slots like The Strokes. Then Capital Records screwed them or something - haven't really heard too much more until now. Until they stole my life and my right eardrum... if I play track 4, TO ME NOW one more time I'll be declared clinically insane. This self-titled debut album is above and beyond the call to arms.
Listen to MERCY ARMS and you'll feel like you've been swept away to sea and washed up on a magical island where the people dance all day and only wear white. HALF RIGHT echos the up-beat urgency of the Shout Out Louds, CAROLINE is the epic ballad of the one that got away and FOOTSTEPS is the even solemner tale of hollow hearts and Alaska (please don't be about that film INTO THE WILD - it's just too crippling). SHINE A LIGHT DOWN is the odd one out of the album, breaking you from your lucid and dream and suspending you into an Outback shoot ‘em up, raving mad lunatic style ballad. Very odd.
Broken hearts, magical lands and lunatics aside, Mercy Arms have independently created a truly sublime, layered and eerie masterpiece. This could be very well be your favourite album of the year. OK, one last time and I promise I will take TO ME NOW off repeat, but you're going to have to help me with the come down.
