There will always be a soft spot in my heart for those crazy pop assholes The Unicorns. The antics that they used to pull, trying to break up the band while playing a song, or purposefully screwing up a live performance just because one of them had a fight with another, well it was no surprise when they broke up. But out of that came Islands: just another sunny pop group that is a bit more stable and released their last record in 2007. Yet once again, Nick Thornburn has decided he needs a new outlet for his insatiable song writing urges.
Human Highway is that band. With another former Island-er Jim Guthrie, they have split the creative effort and spent time learning how to harmonise, listening to doo-wop, and drawing on all their folk backgrounds. Infectious and blissful, the songs haunt you, not like freaky ghosts or whatever, but in that good ‘I can't stop humming this and I could listen to it for days on end' way.
