Now or Heaven, The Broken West

Article published 18th Mar 09

Ah, California. Few other modern day locales conjure up so much mystique. Surfers, sunshine; hippies, cults; serial killers... serial killer hippie cults.

They may not be killers, but LA's The Broken West sure can craft a killer pop song. Conjuring up all manner of former So Cal sons, like Emitt Rhodes, Jon Brion, and some East Coast kids like The Strokes and The Cars too, this is unfussy music to get ready for the big night out. Standouts include the sublime pop of 'Actioneer', or the fist pumping joyride of 'Perfect Games'.

Produced by Thom Monahan of the sonically inclined Pernice Brothers, and released on the always-reliable local label Longtime Listener, this is a great wind down album for the end of summer. Love it while it lasts.
