A decade ago, Sweden's Robyn was considered by TwoThousand to be one of the most frighteningly M.O.R. artists to spook the charts. Her Max Martin penned ballads featured cheesy E.S.O.L. lyrics that would make a Danish backpacker cringe (for example, take the line “you’re the one that I ever needed” from the nails on a chalkboard smash hit 'Show Me Love'). Her early sub-Eurovision pop drivel still haunts Mix 106.5, causing TwoThousand’s hands to begin to tremble every time it tunes in for the Saturday Night Party Mix.

How, then, did she manage to create the brilliant single 'Konichiwa Bitches' from her cutting edge new album ROBYN? TwoThousand suspects it had something to do with the European commercial success of pop tart with indie-cred, Annie (recently visiting Australia) and The Knife.

The latter, a Swedish family duo, were responsible for the FBi/JJJ smash 'Heartbeats', and the accompanying album DEEP CUTS. Presumably, their impressive sales and international acclaim led to their employment as producers on half of Robyn’s new album.

So, where does this leave TwoThousand? Bobbing its head to one of the only artists getting airplay on both FBi and Mix 106.5 (although we’re betting FBi will ban it once they discover her shameful past). The rest of the 2005 album, while not quite as interesting, is nevertheless a startling effort considering the tokenistic tripe that too-often surfaces when Popettes decide to take risks (with the exception of Gwen Stefani, who is clearly a role model for Robyn). And Robyn, or her writers, must have been taking English lessons over the past few years because her lyrics and delivery are pure genius. Thoroughly modern pop!
