As much as it pains me to admit, sometimes I miss something.

The Ruby Suns' gem of an album SEA LION was one such miss. Released in March this year, somehow, despite having my ear to the pulse of the underground, this dazzling blend of African/Polynesian rhythms, Beach Boys harmonies, and lo-fi dream pop passed me by.

This is a party fit for Paul Simon, El Guincho, and Panda Bear. And with 'Tane Mahuta' sung entirely in Maori, Sea Lion's Ryan McPhun gives the album an otherworldly grounding in his adopted home of New Zealand.

Bright, sunny, and spiraling, SEA LION is a welcome companion for the coming summer months. It's not too late for you to get a copy of one of the most directional antipodean releases this year, or if you're headed to Meredith this weekend, check them out live.
