HEAR is the enema your iTunes needs. Bringing you the most thought-provoking and up-to-date music reviews this side of Lester Bangs, HEAR sifts through the ever growing mountain of press releases and promos to only feature albums, EPs, LPs and mixes that we want to, not that we have to. Also, we try and make things make sense in 200 words or less so that you can just listen to the music.
We're all back in Sydney and thank God all that holiday crap is over with. You know how you can celebrate? Danimals!
One of the most exciting Aussie acts around, Danimals make music that twists, turns and sputters with life. They kinda sound like Flying Lotus making beats for Animal Collective (and their antecedent Beach Boys), with playful melodies, lo-fi, shambling production and a sunny disposition.
As part of the current exhibition Reality Check - Watching Sylvania Waters, we have had the pleasure or rediscovering the enigma that is Noeline Donaher. "There's no regrets, no tears goodbye. I don't want you back, we only cry". A translation of Edith Piaf's classic, Donaher's soft porn, synth beats remix is indicative of the faux sophistication and romanticism of cult Australian TV series Sylvania Waters, and its projection of Sydney to a global audience.
Audio Books call to mind a delightful, soft-hued daytime drama in which a young girl (let's call her 'Andrea') loses sight in freak mining accident. (This is obviously set in mid-west America where children do such things, duh.) After many tears spilled by frowsy parents, plus a mild-psychotic incident where 'Andrea' stabs out all the eyes of her baby dolls with a blunt pencil, a new day dawns.
OTOUTO (pronounced Otto-ootoe) spawn from the Two Bright Lakes fold: a bunch of friends and relatives in Melbourne putting out disjointed records (Kid Sam, Psuche) that push and prod lo-fi pop in all sorts of compelling directions.
The Melbourne trio could be painfully ironic, even childish: pots and pans, a woozy Casio and food references, but this is expertly played, complex music.
We’ve only heard the first single of this like everyone else, but it’s already racking up in the 30’s on our iTunes play count, thank God 'cos that Kings Of Leon CD was really starting to shit us, and Lucy hates the Christina Aguilera song we flog too.
.Flashback to 1989, to a warehouse on the outskirts of Belgium and you might just find yourself raving your furry monster feet off to the vocals of Femc Ya Kid K. Fast forward to 2007, to an inner city faux-warehouse-come-rave-cave in uptown Melbourne and you’re most likely going to hear Simian Mobile Disco’s homage to those Eurobeat superstars in the form of their new track ‘It's The Beat’, courtesy of Ninja from The Go Team.
”BIG on the underground”
“What’s the point of knocking me down?”
M.I.A’s new single starts with a vehement call to her critics. Her lines acknowledging that it will be hard to follow ARULAR, her debut album that blew up worldwide. The aftermath has meant everyone is expecting anything she will drop will explode in their ear drum.
