Simple rearrangement of words can have startling effects. For example, “album cover” equals great, while “cover album” equals terrible. Usually.
Queen of Japan have made a name for themselves doing clever covers of old hits and misses. Most often, this is a recipe for grave disaster (Vonda Shepard, anyone?). But Queen of Japan’s smart choice of songs, uber-cool style, and all pervasive sexual innuendo have made all of their releases essential listening.
The most recent release is TOKYO RISEN, which isn’t all that recent. It’s actually a re-release of their debut NIGHTLIFE IN TOKYO, along with a bunch of extra tracks. The remixes give new life to the covers that gave new life to the originals, while new tracks like 'Mother' (by John Lennon) will have you squirming in your throne. Kiss, Right Said Fred, and Olivia Newton John are all no doubt thankful to Queen of Japan for giving them much needed credibility boosts.
