While The Strokes may have dismissed their New England private school heritage as irrelevant, NYC newbies VAMPIRE WEEKEND embrace their inner preppie with pride. With songs referencing Cape Cod, The Oxford English Dictionary, Louis Vuitton, and cocaine, they're like yacht-bored brats in khakis and navy blazers, taking the piss on Father's Dom Perignon.
What sets this fun, exciting album apart from the usual scruffy indie fare - aside from the great songwriting - is the inclusion of Afro-pop and island influences. It's an album indebted to The Strokes as well as David Byrne and Paul Simon. If you'd told me 20 years ago that one day 'Graceland' would be hip, I would called you a liar, slapped you in the face, and dragged you behind a truck. But y'know what? It's here now, and I love it! Now where are my damn penny loafers? Hurrumph!!
