The Ramones and My Bloody Valentine seem like an unlikely pair. But L.A. duo No Age have created a pad where the two share a beer, an op-shop couch, and a total “dude” crush on each other. Marrying the lo-fi experimentation of early Pavement, Trumans Water, and Black Dice with bratty garage rock and teenage lyrics, WEIRDO RIPPERS is fun music about mucking around.
Segueing from soundscapes to indie skronk (sometimes in the same song), Dean Spunt and Randy Randall bury killer hooks and slacker anthems between stoned-out sequences or under waves of tape hiss. These skate punks have a hefty bag of tricks, fer shur. Yet unlike some other noise outfits, it doesn’t take a concerted effort (or an arts degree) to appreciate their moves.
Compiling tracks from their five limited edition, vinyl-only EPs, WEIRDO RIPPERS sounds surprisingly coherent. It’s got flow, and the songs hang together like a well-hung show. With their refreshing naivety and energy, No Age are talented, intelligent, and engaging. For all you art lurkers on the lookout for good times without pretension get stuck into WEIRDO RIPPERS. It goes great with box wine.
