WEDNESDAY 9 APRIL

Rarely do the ramifications of one simple choice weigh more heavily than at the Pick ‘n' Mix stand. Milk bottles, freckles or jelly beans? A rogue pineapple? A zingin peppermint perhaps? Choose wisely, and you're on a sugar high. Choose poorly, and you're in a glucose-induced rut (with liquorice between your teeth).

Like lollies in a milkbar, so are the events of our week. This week's pickings are a veritable mixed bag. There's a lot of choice, but tapping the right mix is up to you. A Sticky bar? Paella? Parkinson's? Then there's a screener. Sing's. A vintage bus ride. A Spring Court and a new tee. What will your mix be? The choice could affect your afternoon, your weekend or your whole life. So make the call.

Issue 131. Pick ‘n' Mix.

Gregory Crewdson's BENEATH THE ROSES reveals his elaborately choreographed, large-scale photographs which blur the line between cinema and photography.

His new pictures take place, often at dusk, in unnamed American towns, streets, and homes, showing subjects caught in transition and laced with ambiguity. A woman sits on her bed having dragged a rose bush through her house, a man in a forest is digging up suitcases, and a little boy stares up at a bridge as his friends vanish in the mist. The effect is both mesmerising and unsettling as a heady cocktail of anxiety and intrigue is created.

Crewdson's talent lies in making the immediately epic become painstakingly intricate. He encourages readers to look around corners and peer into windows, even if they are somewhat worried about what they might find. Included towards the end of the book are production stills, lighting charts, sketches, and architectural plans that provide an insight into the man behind the pictures and raise appreciation for the creative exertion the shoots require. There's also essay by acclaimed fiction writer Russell Banks who has much more room to articulate the genius of Crewdson's work than we do here.

Reality Check, The Teenagers

9th Apr 08

The American media only invented "the teenager" as recently as the '50s. Yet those melodramatic, erratic, sexy sexy young thangs have come to TOTALLY take over the world, gripping the global marketplace tighter than Britney's fist on a Chihuahua-laden fluffy pink handbag. OMG!!

Taking our continual fascination and fetishization with teenagers to laughable, logical extremes are Parisian trio The Teenagers. They combine the earnestness of a Mike Mills Air video with The Smiths tongue-in-cheek, Soft Tigers youthful enthusiasm, and the pop of fellow Parisians Phoenix.

Doling out terminally trendy electro-pop, REALITY CHECK takes the piss out of cheerleaders, Americans, day-old pizza, Jared Leto, 90210, MySpace, San Diego, SHOWGIRLS - even Ben ASS-fleck. It's as catchy as it is hilarious. And with a genuine affection for their subject matter, The Teenagers make guilty pleasures painfully hip. Or, like, whatever, OK?

Martin Luther King had a dream. I had two: one involved wearing a g-string to my 2012 Oscar acceptance speech, the other; a cute-as-pie boutique/coffee shop (that spins old vinyl, bakes homemade muffins and makes the best coffee in Bondi) opening barefoot distance from my office/apartment/crack den.

The latter is a dream no longer. Total sweethearts, Ellice and Jac, fresh back from London, have just this week imported a little bit of Shoreditch into 2026. You'll be parked here every day until they get a restraining order because it's one of the seriously special spots in this big bad city.

Labels include: Sretsis, Maise, myPetsQuare, Who Am Eye and Deadly Ponies. The girls host monthly knitting nights and the yo-yo biscuits are killer.

I once went to a church in Orange County, California, with a drive-through Sunday service. Here, all the cheeseburger and root-beer-float guzzling folk could get their Communion, hear the day's scripture and make their weekly donations without leaving the SUV. Genius!

In Oz however, we prefer our churches without the drive-through window and occasionally, with video art. Pioneering and prolific US video artist Bill Viola is coming to Australia, and his work will be on show at the MCA, the AGNSW, and another, more unorthodox venue...

From this week, St Saviour's Church in Redfern will be transformed nightly into a space for two of Viola's beautiful and eerie video/sound installations (both taken from his four-hour long piece, THE TRISTAN PROJECT).

It's a perfect venue for his strange, ethereal and dreamlike moving images, which often have religious undertones. Definitely worth getting out of the car for.

Remember NINE QUEENS, the con-man caper flick from Argentina that lingered in small cinemas back in the early ‘00s? Director Fabian Bielinsky followed this debut with THE AURA, receiving a handful of glowing reviews and sweeping the local awards before he suffered a fatal heart attack in 2006.

Even without the subtext of vanished potential, THE AURA is a film in which envelopes are left unopened and mysteries go unexplained. Ricardo Darín gives a Mitchum-worthy performance as Esteban, a taxidermist who is so reclusive he might be mute. He dreams of committing the perfect crime - and then coincidence gives him his chance.

Lazy film-makers often rely on cheap ambiguity to make the audience do all the heavy thematic lifting. (Use your knees, people.) THE AURA, though, ripples with things unspoken, sitting just under the surface. One reviewer described it as possessing a "Beckett play or a werewolf movie" waiting to burst free. It's deliberate, slow, and unsettling.

THE AURA never managed a cinema release in Australia, and that's a damn shame - but much more of a shame is that Bielinsky won't make another film. This is all you get.

"They're turning kids into slaves, just to make cheaper sneakers. What's the real cost cause the sneakers don't seem that much cheaper? Why are we paying so much money for sneakers when they're made by little slave kids?" ‘Think About It' - Flight of The Concords (1.26).

NO MORE must we a) support child slavery b) pay so much money for sneakers. Because we have Spring Court.

Originally made in France for tennis greats, Spring Courts are designed in the croissant country using tough natural rubber soles, lined leather and thick Indian cotton. They're double stitched, have arch support and a removable insole. This combats another sneaker-related trauma - sweaty feet. Those partial to a stint on a fixie will know that after a few trips, sneaker sides get scuffed, soles get cracked and feet stink. No no. SC's have eight ventilation channels. These are kind of like speed holes for feet - keeping soles cool so you can ride extra fast. Without socks. Genius.

As a sprouting youth obsessed by secret corridors, tunnels and labyrinths, the illusive nature of entry to this here bar really turned me on. One arrives to a back alley door instructing you to notify Michael or Benito of your presence. Post a patient wait, you are warmly greeted by said gentlemen and ushered into the elevator. The revelation is an unforeseen hideaway.

From ancient bricks and Victorian parlour lounges to collaged walls and video-gaming stools, the mood is warm, bright eyed and elegantly mixed at Sticky. The blackboard frenzy of Italian/French beers, wines and nibbling niceties ensure you can feel worlds away or right at home here.

If you are after a change of scenery, some black cocktail magic, a pure Italian aperitif or a dimly lit canoodle; the warm service, interior splendour and spill of soft live sounds (from the restaurant below) will please your palette.

For most, the idea of catching a bus conjures up thoughts of congested bus-lanes, annoying jingles and commuters inconveniently carrying coins rather than a travel card.

Let's face it. The novelty of bus travel probably wore off when you were five, and only became cool again for a brief period when the 422 was a better option than your mum's Volvo.

It's time to bring the bus back, even for a single season. And what better way to rekindle your childlike love affair with public transport than by taking a ride up top on the free vintage bus service through Marrickville and Newtown? There is even a very polite man who stands at the back in a retro driving suit. The authenticity excites me.

One of life's simplest pleasures is being complimented on your favourite item of clothing. You smile inwardly and gloat a little as you explain (sometimes reluctantly) where you found your fabric treasure - graniph T-shirts have that appeal. Beautiful clean prints from the best designers that you'll be wearing for years to come, while constantly considering whether or not to give up the secret of your source. But graniph only cost $40 a pop so you can tell the world safe in the knowledge you've done a community service. A part of our community service we've got two shirts to give away. To be in the running just tell us the following...

This week's question:
What is your deepest, darkest secret?

a) Not telling, but I still want a shirt

b) I want a shirt so here's one I made up

c) This one happened to a ‘friend'

d) Don't call the cops
