WEDNESDAY 23 APRIL
When he was just a day old, Hermes, God of Boundaries, jumped from his crib on Mount Cyllene, stole Apollo's immortal cows and invented the lyre. Talk about an over achiever. Turns out there are a lot of wing-footed folk round Sydney this week. They ain't stealing cows but they are entertaining us through song, designing pretty stuff using sunlight, inventing mammoth sandwiches and making us laugh. Bless 'em.
TwoThousand. On a wing and a prayer.

How far does your lesbigay folk memory stretch back? Could you identify six types of lesbian hairstyle?
Direct out of Amsterdam since 2005, the founding editors of GIRLS LIKE US have created a wonderful contemporary - er - rag that doesn't assume the existence of a single and complete lesbian community, but at the same time unites women who love women through distinct and sophisticated design and editorially impartial content. With crossover audiences from all walks of life, GLU is a playful antidote to vanilla representations of lesbian ‘culture' and magazines like the UK's DIVA.
This issue features local lifeguard/footballer Bron Richardson as photographed by our very own Mia Mala McDonald, filmmaker Maria Beatty and musician Pauline Boudry among other interesting subjects (even Julia Gillard* has contributed to Issue 7!). GLU, like many brilliant things in life, is run by the small team of Kathrin Hero and Jessica Gysel and is a million times more engaging than this review.

Usually, the more elaborate the 'story' behind an album is - the more it sucks.
So what to make of a beautiful album with a dramatic backstory? It's like a hot chick who's described as having a "good personality".
Last winter, Justin Vernon moved to a cabin in the (freezing cold) woods of Northwestern Wisconsin, and spent three months alone, chopping wood, doing chores, and recording FOR EMMA, FOREVER AGO. It's mellow, emotive, melancholy folk, like The Arcade Fire gone acoustic, Neil Young, Destroyer - even Bill Withers at times.
While most modern day folk bands get caught up in the annoying affectations of "freak" folk, Bon Iver's debut is simply good, compelling songwriting. It sounds like a lost relic of the '60s, but - refreshingly - it doesn't sound like a bunch of hipsters TRYING to make an album that sounds like a lost relic of the '60s.
Geez. I wish more dudes would start moving to the woods to make albums.

Perched on the corner of Marlborough and Cleveland Street in Surry Hills is Bird Emporium. The nesty spot is home to ‘Bird', an environmentally sound moniker for beautiful textiles that are created by designer Rachel Bending. What makes this bird so special is its painstakingly designed fabrics from Byron Bay, manufactured using solar power and hand-painted with water-based dyes.
Yippys will go bananas for the range of cushions, lampshades and tableware, soaps and buttons. The umbrellas and sausage dog ‘draught excluders' are sweet too, but made-to-order panel curtain kits are far sweeter. Even David McTaggart couldn't poo poo this one.

Imagine we could use chroma key greenscreens to get away from it all - just super impose ourselves onto a backdrop of choice, and be gone.
For his installation BAD FAITH, Sydney artist Adam Costenoble drew on ideas of self-imposed exile, transgression from civilization, and the notion of living an independent, self-sustained existence in geographic isolation.
Currently on show at LOCKSMITH, the work features a small cubby-like cabin that Adam constructed out of scrap timber, and video footage of him making it overlaid with green screen technology against a background of an idyllic bush landscape.
LOCKSMITH is a new artist-run initiative in Alexandria that has a policy of not charging rent for artists to use the space. It also won't take commission on works that sell. Crazy! But that's why we like it. Keep an ear to the door for music nights, video screenings and more exhibitions.

TEKKONKINKREET follows Black and White, two street orphans who love their city and are fighting to keep the Yakuza, theme park developers and aliens away from what is rightfully theirs: Treasure Town.
Opposites in world views, actions and names, Black and White look after each other and keep each other in check. Black is strategic and brooding and White is innocent and sinister.
TEKKONKINKREET explores the themes of cities, identity and relationship. The city, Treasure Town, is a vision of old Tokyo dilapidated, charming and warm. It looks like a Moebius or a Geof Darrow comic. Its retro-neon advertising and insane details form the contrasted backdrop of the characters' angular and simple style.
Overall, the look and feel of this Anime steps away from the traditional big-eyed Miyazaki look and feel. The film is one of the first Anime to be directed by an American - and it seems to work. Michael Arias has created something tight with genuinely engaging and awe-inspiring cinematic moments. This, aided by a score from British electronic musos Plaid, creates a nuanced, exciting and visually-rich cinematic experience.

Buying a T-shirt is kind of like choosing a pizza base. Stay with me now. Imagine yourself walking up to the local pizza store. You're hungry, damn hungry and you want something basic, but something that can (if necessary) also handle the toppings you crave such as peppers, aubergine and the perfect jeans, ahem, sorry sauce. Far away from the Pizza Hut end of the spectrum is Bassike, a label started by two girls (with a history in sartorial splendour: Ksubi, Seven, Paper Denim & Cloth) specialising in T-shirts and catering to a market lacking in great simple basics.
Bassike offers tees to make your mouth water, made from organic cottons and wearable blends of cotton, jersey and wool. These are the pieces that will support your Hawaiian toppings (chain store finds and slightly iffy vintage pieces), and are subtle yet delicious when you have a super supremeo (Ann Demeulemeester pants). And why stop there? With their latest offerings including denim and an underwear range you'd better put their number up next to your Crust menu.

TwoThousand often wishes that the Harbour Bridge could be torn down. Imagine how fast coffees would be served if we didn't have to wait in line behind scrawny North Shore 'Soccer Mums' on inner city reconnaissance ordering their decaf-soy waters.
But every time we've made it past the tollbooth, strapped with explosives, we've been unable to detonate because of the one thing we'd miss: The Fat Sandwich Shop in Neutral Bay.
It's actually called something far less interesting, Fab Food 2, but is referred to as the Fat Sandwich Shop by those in the know on the North Shore (of which there are very few).
In a possible salute to Chinatown (bold considering its positioning in Sydney's whitest locale) customers are asked to order in numbers, rather than ingredients. So, TwoThousand recommends 14, 13, and 6 (but without the mayo). The End*.
*Joking. The corned beef and pickle; the roast beef, potato salad, and mustard; and the chicken, basil, avocado, and water-cress sandwiches are all enormous and delicious. The chicken, basil, and asparagus soup is very filling, and the caramel slices and brownies are "the bomb".

There's certain appeal to the idea that ANZAC day is set aside in remembrance of the forebearers who died fighting to protect Australian values, so we honour that sacrifice by getting real pissed and gambling. Only the prudest of wowsers would suggest it is inappropriate, and they are welcome to remain sanctimoniously at home. The rest of us, meanwhile, will be downing schooners to the cries of "HEAD ‘EM UP" in some of the great drinking establishments around this city, fully enjoying the fistful of cash (won or merely withdrawn) that can be waved about in the two-up ring.
So, beer in hand and ready to heckle the tails-betters, Two Thousand directs you to the best (two-up) venues:

Apparently "putting the ‘fun' back into ‘funeral'" will be Ajax, Sleater Brockman, Hoops' Ninalasvegas and Bad Ezzy, Health Club's Mike Tyson, Spruce Lee, and Magic Happens (aka Master Celebrator). Plus the n.o.t.o.r.i.o.u.s. Gay Bash DJs.

Now that the cold-and-flu season is well and truly upon us, so too is an influx of cold-and-flu remedies. Be it ginger, garlic or even cod liver oil; everyone has a suggestion.
Talk to anyone from the pre-Codral days, they’ll tell you that the hot toddy is the only solution to a case of the sniffles. That was until Toddy hopped onto the scene with their decidedly warm yet aesthetically pleasing pyjamas, singlets, leggings and long johns that by virtue of making sure you don’t get cold - also make sure you don’t get a cold. To keep you in fine health we’ve got two singlets, dress, short and legging combos to give away. To be in the running just tell us the following…
This week’s question:
What is the best way to cure a cold?
a) Drink right through it
b) Stay in bed and feel sorry for yourself
c) Drink hot toddies
d) Wear Toddy PJs

TwoThousand is a weekly snapshot of Sydney's subculture, fired by email into the loving arms of people who realise that the best things in life are often hard to find. It is compiled by an amorphous gaggle of writers, stylists, designers and photographers who all like huddling under that big umbrella we like to call creativity. Without editorial independence TwoThousand has nothing. All editorial you read is featured because it's worth it - not because it's paid for.
ADVERTISING PARTNERSHIPS
TwoThousand is a trusted and proven medium for advertisers to engage with Sydney's most elusive individuals - our subscribers.
