WEDNESDAY 30 APRIL
It's that time of year when the fashion throng descends upon us - the person next to you at a café orders toast with low fat butter and no one bats an eyelid. So in celebration of all things stylish we've put out an issue with a distinct literary flavour, and a high brow one at that. There's comics, colouring books, a good girl's guide to the Lower East Side and Alice in Wonderland but not even a hint of AUSTRALIA'S NEXT TOP MODEL. Well unless they're here that is.
TwoThousand. Unfashionably early

BOOK INCLUDES THE SIXTY-PAGE EPIC PUPPET SHOW MUSICAL, LES MISRAHI - AN ODE TO JEN'S LANDLORD, RECENTLY PERFORMED OUTSIDE HIS OFFICE.
Reverend Jen is, in her own words, a social deviant and freak, which, no doubt makes her the perfect person to write a travel guide to the Lower East Side.
There may be a lot of goons on the LES these days, who, according to Jen, eat at Ray's pizza, unaware of the part it played in putting Sal from Rosario's out of business, but the dirty, freakish soul of this block south of Houston beats on. Says Jen, "When word began to spread that I'd put pen to paper in order to write a travel guide to the Lower East Side, a lot of people asked me, ‘Why the f!*k are you writing a travel guide Reverend Jen? For starters, you can't afford to go anywhere...'" But it's lucky she has done because this is the kind of guidance any non-goon visitor to NYC needs.
Rev Jen is a poet, preacher, painter, performer, Patron Saint of the Uncool and Voice of the Downtrodden and Tired. Read: she went to art school and now hangs out drinking 24 oz. cans of Bud. Let her explain how you can easily do the same.

The thing is, I love Mexican food. And even though half the taquerias around the world taste pretty much the same, do I care? No. Gimme a margarita and some cheese enchiladas and I'm stoked.
So should it really matter that this debut from Cleveland-born, Brooklyn-based Joe Williams aka White Williams kinda sounds exactly like outtakes from Brian Eno's HERE COME THE WARM JETS? It's one of my favorite albums - great pop songs with crazy space glam production, combining camp, horror, sex, artifice, and art in equal measures.
SMOKE is just as fun and flavorful, with bits of P.Funk, modern day hip-hop, and squirrely Fourtet-style electronics thrown in the mix. And all recorded by some bedroom wunderkind.
Is the songwriting as good? Actually, yes. Is it as clever and original? No. Does that matter? Not to my stomach. Dos mas tamales, por favor senor!

With the sanctity of poor little Alice in tatters amid allegations that Lewis Carroll loved absinthe and with the demise of Wonderland Rooty Hill (R.I.P) - it's nice to know that for us inner-westies, the acid trip can still live on.
You see, just as Alice stumbled into the nether world with that small fall down the rabbit hole, we too can lose hours of our lives after stumbling into Wonderland on Alice.
Popping up out of nowhere like a Cheshire feline, this quaint store with bizarre opening hours just appeared on a rather shop-free street in Newtown.
It sells all sorts of kitsch knick knacks and collectibles, the sorts of things you may definitely need, were you to in fact attend a mad hatter's tea-party.

Amidst the concrete corridors and lucid glass laneways of the ‘2 Dank Street' institution, many a stimulating thing may be found. Here, is a newly-opened, suitably-named homage to Waterloo's postcode, Studio 20/17. The hidden cache, merging gallery with workshop, houses contemporary objects alongside obscure and ornate forms of jewellery.
Raised by tool-filled aproneers Melanie Ihnen and Bridget Kennedy, the space promotes an innocent romance with craftsmanship, contemporary form and wearability.
Lady-sweet or androgynous, the wearable array is vast and whilst perusing or purchasing, the artisans will continue building before your eyes.
Studio 20/17 hosts an opening bash and exhibition on Wednesday April 30 with works by Emma Fielden. Expect hand-crafted jewels and objects with graphic qualities and delicate surface textures said to be pieces on the shore of poetry.

Skateboarding - it's not for everyone. It's noisy and painful and something many of us grow out of when we get into the serious business of finding a career, attending art openings and DJ-ing. Thanks to the MTV treatment, skating is no longer an underground activity, and although there are hundreds of public skate parks, they're all swarming with little kids on razor scooters. However, this new release from locally based clothing label Blank is proof that street skating is not only alive, it is looking more creative than ever..
Skillfully collated from digital and 16mm footage gathered over the past few years, coupled with a soundtrack from local artists such as Eddy Current and Laura, CRASHING TO EARTH is an enjoyable watch for anyone who has gazed longingly at a marble bench. It's also encouraging that some of the riders seem to be of at least legal drinking age. You might even bump into one or two of them at an art opening.

No doubt comic books will soon snake down to the bottom of the cultural ladder again, but for now, nicely-bound graphic novels are available in credible bookshops. Why would you enter the lowly, unwelcoming comic store? Four words and an exclamation point: Free Comic Book Day!
Once a year, publishers pick a single issue to give away in an attempt to lure new customers into the crack-like addiction of monthly comic buying. There are anthology-style samplers from indie artists, SIMPSONS comics for kids, Mike Mignola's dependably awesome HELLBOY, and more.
Best by a wide margin, though, is the first issue of ALL STAR SUPERMAN. It's an American icon reinvented by two Scotsmen: written by the perpetual idea machine that is Grant Morrison and drawn by Frank Quietly, who is half-Chris Ware, half-Jack Kirby. It's one of the best comics of the last decade - and the only superhero comic to make Time magazine's top 10 graphic novels of 2007 list, if that's the kind of reassurance you need to face hypermuscled men in circus underwear again.
Besides, it's free. To paraphrase Spider-Man's theme: action is its own reward.

One can only assume that the name ‘Satellite' in this case refers to the retro furniture, which in its 'hey day', would have been cutting-edge and futuristic. Think THE JETSONS and what modern day meant to man 30 years back.
To the local alternate set who prefer hunger holes that remain hidden from King Steet's view, Satellite definitely caters. Meat and three vege types be warned, there's no big breakfast here. ‘Pressed' toast [is it still toast if it's not toasted?] with vanilla ricotta and almonds almost smudges the line that keeps breakfast from dessert. The original record player belts out Mo-town favourites, which is complimented by a very kitsch collection of reads and regulars.

It seems that the universe is almost begging us to start appreciating menswear. Last week brought us the opening of Incu's mens store and this week RAFW is bringing us the likes of James Cameron and Friedrich Gray.
Giving us a heads-up on what's about to be cool, the New Gen Parade won't be without well-dressed lads either.
The parade is featuring up-and-coming lables like Johnny Leong and Glenn Cameron's label Who Am Eye, praised by well, us, and a lot of others for their leather gear, hoods, and jeans.
On top of these crackers and other labels like Marsu, the universal man is now spoilt for choice...

They say money makes the world go ‘round. Indeed, as much as you may hate to admit it, someone does need to fund the corn syrup and red food dye for your next slasher flick. But getting funding for a project can be just like getting blood (fake blood) from a stone (the government). The secret, we're told, lies in the fine art of submission writing. Sure, it sounds boring, but really it's just like another script. The drama of the budget. The excitement of making a strong director's statement. The romance between your supporting documents and the application. Okay maybe not. But learn the real ins and outs with an all star industry panel and there's Q&A time at the end so you can ask them how YOU AND YOUR STUPID MATE ever got funding. -JG

We know your secret. You told us a few weeks ago. Your favourite songs are high rotation on classic hit radio stations.
We don't have a problem with that as such but when you get thrown some mix tape madness like Dew Process threw at us you have a responsibility to spread the word. We've got a little bit of J Award winners, The Panics to get you up to speed.
By the time you hit play on some Shout Out Louds you should be dancing. Keep the pace with Tokyo Police Club and Dr Dog. Then rock-rock-rockabilly along to the Brisbane darlings Yves Klein Blue. To round it all off, come down with a bit of Whitley.
To win a pack with all these albums just answer the following...
This week's question:
What was the most golden bygone musical era and why?
a) 1950s
b) 1960s
c) 1970s
d) 1980s

TwoThousand is a weekly snapshot of Sydney's subculture, fired by email into the loving arms of people who realise that the best things in life are often hard to find. It is compiled by an amorphous gaggle of writers, stylists, designers and photographers who all like huddling under that big umbrella we like to call creativity. Without editorial independence TwoThousand has nothing. All editorial you read is featured because it's worth it - not because it's paid for.
ADVERTISING PARTNERSHIPS
