WEDNESDAY 4 JUNE
Layers. Chicken farms have got 'em, postmodernism don't (well, at least not in the hierarchical sense). Cakes have got 'em, and so should your wardrobe. This week, you'll find them in a fajita, on grainy Super 8 film and in a hoodie. You'll also find them in Photoshop, but for the sake of your sanity we suggest you steer away from all that. There's a reason why IT kids have trouble getting laid.

If the word 'awesomest' was an illustration (or even a word) then it would be illustrated by Shaun Tan. Tan is the king of Australian book illustration and creator of last years award winning comic book THE ARRIVAL.
Typically Tan's stories are allegories about the human condition, his skill as an artist and writer is to take everyday themes and create an extraordinary and hallucinatory experience. The beauty in Tan's work is his ability to create visually stunning imagery without allowing it to dominate his narrative thread. Simplicity is the key in Tan's books. It's revealed amongst a backdrop of fantastic worlds and luscious imagery page by page by page.
Tan's latest work, TALES FROM OUTER SUBURBIA, follows similar terrain. This time there are a series of short stories linked together by whimsical and surreal events that occur in the very real places of suburban Australia. The strength of the book is its ability to tell stories as if they were your own, enhanced by Tan's beautiful imagery.
* See Shaun Tan speak next Thursday June 12, 4pm at Shearer's on Norton. 99 Norton St, Leichhardt. Or Thursday June 12, 7pm at Kinokuniya. 500 George St, City. RSVP 9262 7996.

Do you know what a hippie is?
With their headscarves and hand bells, communal chanting and four-part harmonies, Yeasayer have a lot in common with west coast burnouts like Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles, or ELO. But they also share similarities with fellow skinny-jeaned loft-lurking Brooklynites TV on The Radio, Grizzly Bear, and Dirty Projectors.
Their debut album ALL HOUR CYMBALS is an incredibly fun boho romp. Its beautifully crafted and innovative songs offer a blend of '80s avant-rock and spaced-out '70s soft rock that's both kinda cheesy and really exhilarating - a perfect encapsulation of the new, new age hipster mysticism.
Guilty pleasure? Dude, it's 2008 - guilty pleasures don't exist anymore. If only this hadn't gotten lost in the mail, we woulda told you about it sooner. Turn up the sitar, motherf####r!

In Melbourne, Alpha 60 (Alex and Georgie Cleary) are something of the fashion rat pack. Together with TV and Claude Maus they rule the southern city's cobbled lanes. With good reason.
Alpha 60's collections call on the spangled muse of film (and the occasional celebrity). This is first obvious by the store's name, Alphaville, taken from the 1965 classic by Jean-Luc Godard. Jean-Luc himself is a recurring player, to be seen on T-shirts and the walls of the Melbourne stores. Kate Moss has also made an appearance, on a slinky full-length dress in Summer 07.
The lady d'jour however, is Laura Palmer (you might remember her from such series as TWIN PEAKS). Laura comes on a tote with every purchase from the new Sydney store. In general, the label is known for working wonders with volume, and their oversized tees have carried tributes to everything from triangles to cats (perhaps a nod to the designers' one time job at a Canberra cat shelter).
Until now, we've been able to glean snippets of Alpha 60 in Sydney. It's time to take in the whole piece. Welcome to Alphaville opened last week on Oxford Street opposite another Melbourne import Assin. The Sydney incarnation boasts a clean interior, a full collection, the infamous ‘White Shoes' and a young River Phoenix smokin' the walls.

DETAIL FROM PRINT BY THOBIAS FALDT
I trust you are familiar with NowNow, TwoThousand's sophisticated, worldly cousin? You may have spotted him at a Right Angle family get together, propped against a window sill sipping at a snifter of port, calmly snapping off the odd shot on his Contax while TwoThousand gets wasted on fruit punch and plays charades with the kids.
NowNow is not actually a theoretical person, but a very real, very busy project-based collective. On top of regularly updated features and strangely intriguing pictures of people's desktops, there is an impressive online gallery with contributions from a broad range of local and international photographers. And don't even get me started on WON magazine.
Of course, the next step in their evolution as an active agent of the artsis for NowNow to curate an exhibition. Collating works from contributors as far afield as Sweden, USA, UK and Adelaide, NEVERNESS, PART 1 contrasts notions of eternity to frame the exploratory nature of a global group show.
Somehow finding clarity through the eyes of many, this is a group show that knows what you mean when you say ‘not another bleedin' group show'. Featuring the photographic work of Linus Bill, Thobias Fäldt, Conor O'Brien and others. One can only wonder what they'll do next.

HERE AND HERE
Classic cult movies, like books, are the ones everyone knows, but haven't necessarily seen before. Then when you stumble upon one on Fox Classics or in a friend's DVD collection one rainy Sunday after fifteen too many beers and some ill-advised tequila shots the night before, the penny drops.
You discover how [insert film industry legend here] earned their stripes, and you learn where heavily pop-culture referenced shows like THE SIMPSONS get their material.
In DELIVERANCE, for example, you discover where Peter Berg got the idea for a film about a boys weekend gone wrong, and you learn why the sound of duelling banjos is synonymous with inbred yokels, and why grown men on camping trips jokingly tell each other to squeal like a pig.
Then in PERFORMANCE you see Mick Jagger in a muddled, surrealist orgy and you either want to dig your eyes out with the wrong end of a spoon, or eat a mushroom and do it all again. And afterwards, you wish you'd been able to see it all on a big screen. Except for the last part if you go see it at Chauvel. Instead you can sit back and pretend it's 1972.

It seems that the further we go into the future the more our focus on durable craftsmanship regresses. Some fashion, in particular men's, has a lot to answer in this regard. Asuza are bucking this trend through retro-futurism, which it would seem is a combination of forward-thinking design and dedicated craftsmanship from a time long gone by.
Geometric panels, prints and a tip of the hat to Japanese architecture is complimented by the all important finishing touches - leather-trimmed jackets and linings that will make you want to wear your hoodie inside out. They do say you need to look back to look forward but when they both look so good which way should you turn?

Little local folklore for ya - Flying Fajita Sistas flew up to Sydney late last year from Wollongong, bringing along a tasty range of killer margaritas, a staff of friendly, beautiful women, and a name destined to be referred to the "Flying Vagina Sistas" (by me, at least). Do you think they play these?
OH, about the food - let just say this is now neck-and-neck with Café Pacifico for the BEST Mexican in town!.Tasty Tex-Mex piled high at reasonable rates. Taco Tuesdays offers $3 tacos and $3 tequila shots; or on any night opt for the $25 banquet if you a) haven't eaten in two days, or b) enjoy being rolled out of the restaurant.
With a large rack of hot sauces dubbed, "the wall of pain", and a festive fiesta back patio - this place has got it all.

Sitting at home, under the doona, watching grainy docos about Joy Division and The Clash on DVD is a boon. But it also makes one wonder why Australia hasn’t moved to capture its own music on grainy film (excluding the endless Farnsie “goodbye” tours). Fret not – a couple of guys from Melbourne have done it.
It took Matt Richards and Jeremy Rouse from Trainwreck 20/20 three Super 8 cameras over four years to interview and capture the live energy of 12 bands, including My Disco, Eddy Current Suppression Ring and Die! Die! Die!. The resulting, SUPER 8 DIARIES is a reflection of Australian music at its rawest.
This week SUPER 8 DIARIES launches in Sydney, with live bands including Tucker B's, Ohana, Charge Group, Castings, QUA, When Chimps Attack, Lola Flash, Do Not Resuscitate, and Alps Of NSW. There's also a BBQ, photography exhibition, screening of the documentary, raffle, and a free beer with each DVD sold. Marketing genius. - VH

Melbourne-based garage band, Eddy Current Suppression Ring, is finally touring their new album, PRIMARY COLOURS. Although the album was released May 3, the launch has been a long time coming, and for those in the know, it won't disappoint. Just go to their MySpace, and check out 'Which Way To Go'; killer track, no doubt. PRIMARY COLOURS is a major step foward for the band, both commercially and artistically. Monks are peaceful types who don't like to be disturbed, so issues in Tibet can't be too pleasing to them on a number of fronts. Das Monk, on the other hand, doesn't care about meditation that much, let alone have the People's Republic of China in his a-hole. He thus has time to make T-shirts that get snapped up before you even realise they exist. Perhaps he's more Ninja like? They get snapped up because they have super clean and colourful designs on lightweight and super soft cotton. That's all well and good, but how do you get one before they sell out? You visit this site or you answer the following question to be in the running to win one.

TwoThousand is a weekly snapshot of Sydney's subculture, fired byemail into the loving arms of people who realise that the best things in life are often hard to find. It is compiled by an amorphous gaggle of writers, stylists, designers and photographers who all like huddling under that big umbrella we like to call creativity. Without editorial independence TwoThousand has nothing. All editorial you read is featured because it's worth it - not because it's paid for.
ADVERTISING PARTNERSHIPS
TwoThousand is a trusted and proven medium for advertisers to engage with Sydney's most elusive individuals - our subscribers.
