You just can't believe everything you read these days.
Surely a city with places that good they're restricted, where going on safari is as easy as hopping in the car and being hijacked is a good thing should be higher up the list.
Maybe they just need to learn to love a little more.
TwoThousand. Top of the pops.

MIRANDA JULY ('YOU KNOW THE PASSWORD, JUST CLEAR YOUR MIND AND LOOK WITHIN. IT WILL PROBABLY BE THE FIRST WORD THAT YOU THINK OF.) (WE WENT WITH 'HELMET'.)
Despite her helmet hair, Miranda July has featured in more than 100,000 sexual submission fantasies (according to the ABS). So, of course, when she tells people to do stuff, they get into it in a big way. What stuff? Um, documenting their bald spots, sculpting a bust of Steve, etc.
LEARNING TO LOVE YOU MORE is a web site and series of exhibitions of work made by the general public in response to 'assignments' given by July and her friend Harrell Fletcher. As of last September, it's also a book, which you can buy here.
Do you - like the Oliver family of Seattle - want Miranda July to pay attention to you? Then start at assignment #68 ('feel the news') and start learnin' to be lovin'. They might put you and your bust of Steve in the next edition.
Format: Book
Motivation: Improves creativity by osmosis

It's official - white is the new black.
After Black Mountain, Black Angels, Black Dice, Black Keys, and Blackety Blackety Black Black (they're HUGE in Oslo), now we're into whites: White Williams, White Rainbow, White Stripes, Barry White, and your new favourite band - White Rabbits.
Coming atcha from NYC via Columbia Missouri (which they deserted a short two years ago), White Rabbits wield catchy, urgent indie pop ala The Walkmen or French Kicks, but mix in some second-wave ska and tango tinges. Skinny tie pop with carnival keyboards? You got it.
This is seriously fun stuff that doesn't take itself at all seriously, and it's catchy as hell. One spin and these Rabbits will be in your head for good. White on!!

People much older and wiser than myself assure me that Kings Cross goes through varying cycles of cleanliness/dirtiness every few years or so that brings different crowds with them each time. Ian Nessick (Scyrte and co-founder of Mooks) and Gareth Moody (Chronicles Of Never and co-founder of Ksubi) are obviously unfazed by the potential for the neighbourhood to change for better or worse and have set up shop, that's right shop, in the middle of the Cross.
Which is a welcome change, especially when it's fitted out with chandeliers, exposed beams and has appropriated newspaper to cover the walls. But the real change is in the stock, whole ranges of Scyrte, Chronicles Of Never, Eley Kishimoto and Akira are a welcome contrast to the bits and bobs we've become accustomed to. Maybe they're unfazed because they've already decided which way the neighbourhood is headed.

Take heed, for the next few weeks the city is going to be bursting with art like a penguin pregnant with a panda. In less convoluted (and disquieting) terms, the Biennale of Sydney is about to spread its arty fingers all over town, and there will be lots of art from lots of big name artists.
Running at the same time, safARI is an unofficial fringe program to the Biennale, showcasing experimental and exuberant new work from 11 unrepresented young Australian artists working across a range of media (from video and sound to drawing and performance).
Capitalising on the national and international focus on the visual arts in Sydney during the Biennale, safARI serves as a platform for emerging artists and the spaces that support them. It will run for three weeks across three ARIs (Artist Run Initiative spaces) - MOP Projects, China Heights and Gaffa Gallery.
*As part of safARI, on June 22 at GAFFA art advisor Barbara Flynn is giving insight into collecting emerging art, and on June 28 there's safARI artist talks at MOP, followed by a tour of the venues.

Is SPEED RACER Kubrick's 2001 for kids?
To call its reception ‘lukewarm' is an understatement, and it's easy to see why. It's too child-friendly for adults - the cute-kid-and-monkey comic relief, straight from the cartoon, will set many eyes rolling - but it's also too long and convoluted for kids. It's hubris worthy of Greek myth to make a film entirely about velocity run for a leisurely, sometimes leaden, two hours or more.
These real, glaring problems? They don't matter. Behind SPEED RACER's flat dialogue and clumsy storytelling, there's more life, more joy, more hypodermic-to-the-eye full-tilt kapow than in a half-dozen other blockbusters slapped together.
The Wachowski Brothers gave us bullet-time and flappy black coats, but now they shift gears into bright colours and bizarre designs. Simple cuts are replaced by kaleidoscopic whip-pans. Kinetic energy turns falling snow into anime speed-lines. It's more than just eye-candy. In the final moments, SPEED RACER's visuals fall apart into gorgeous, candified abstractions.
See it if you're curious how far and fast the Wachowskis will go.

The craftsman behind Note to Self was not your average kid. While most juveniles were trading fags for swigs of Spumanti behind the shelter sheds, Max Olijnyk was following the skater-trails of Matt Hensley and Guy Mariano. He spent just as much time recreating their (retrospectively perhaps too large) pants on his Mum's sewing machine as he did ollying off three-inch gutters.
These days Olijnyk is a grown man about town. He makes zines and has just retired as a designer for Schwipe, but still skates and sews jeans for those who appreciate local design and seek to turn heads with their awesome-looking asses.
Made-to-measure services are available from Max's Melbourne studio, but if that's too far to roll then head to the Darlinghurst saucepan for ready to wear pairs.

Pre-empting our cry for small bars by opening about a year ago, Mission bravely adopted the mould of a restaurant-come-bar-come-art-gallery. Located on an appealingly innocuous side street, in an old Gothic Revival church sandwiched between former warehouses, Mission channels Lower East Side hidden chic almost too well.
On every visit I've been warmly received, and felt comfortable to be as sophisticated or casual as the evening warranted. Not that they're mutually exclusive: things get increasingly casual after a few Negronis. The current winter menu is honest, Mediterranean-influenced fare, and the rotating wine list is always a tight little selection.
While bearing the tedium of state bureaucracy in the wait for Sydney's dining and drinking potential to improve, we should be thankful for places like this.

SON OF RAMBO
Let's be honest. Many of us get a little shiver of excitement around festival time. The rest of us are overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of the program. Fall you into column A or B, there is a Sydney Film Festival experience for you.
We might have missed Isabella Rossellini's GREEN PORNO, but there's still time for ‘suburban noir' THE SQUARE, directed by Nash Edgerton (brother of Joel, more importantly stunt double/man/coordinator of MATRIX, ROUGE and THE QUIET AMERICAN). A wintry Mississippi Delta brings Sundance winner BALLAST, while Sly-inspiration brings SON OF RAMBO. There's the the "controversial" (at a film festival? Never!) ELITE SQUAD.
If you want more info, A types should look here. B types should get an A type to look here for them, there are 57 countries on the the bill after all.

It has been called "the most important book of photographs to come out of Australia in the past five years". Whether or not HIJACKED lives up to the hype, will be yours to judge this Thursday. As a publication and exhibition, HIJACKED is a heavy compilation of photography documenting ‘life in real time'. This denotes snapshots of urban landscapes and the figures that inhabit them, from tattooed whiteboys to tracksuited upside-down boys. - NS

This is exactly what Morrissey would have sounded like when he was 16. Raw and slightly confused, but charming nonetheless. After being part of the well remembered Melbourne groups Sleepy Township and Minimum Chips, Guy Blackman has been frequently described as Melbourne's 'it boy'. Musicians like Jens Lekman, Art of Fighting's Peggy Frew, some of the kids from the Dirty Three, Fabulous Diamonds, Pikelet and Eddy Current have all thrown there hands up to help out with Blackman's debut album. The brother sister duo have just released their debut album 'A Book Like This' and are about to do a bunch of shows in Australia to celebrate. They've just returned from the UK where they recruited a whole new set of fans. Even the overly cynical UK press loved them. If you've seen them live before, you know exactly how hard it is to describe how beautiful their shows are. And if you haven't seen them live, you need to get onto it. They'll fill even the tiniest void in your life. - HM

Laura Palmer was the dirty wench homecoming queen everyone wanted to be, apart from the wrapped in plastic part. What other heroes do we have who mixed Meals on Wheels with cocaine use and a part time job at One Eyed Jacks?
In their great tradition of putting dead, or at least badly behaved, anti-heroes such as River Phoenix, Jean Luc Godard, Nico and Billy ‘my cars, they shift themselves' Brown on t-shirts, dresses, walls and other things, Alpha 60, have put Laura on a tote bag ($40) and t-shirt ($60). And, behold: it is fricken awesome.
Thanks to Alpha60 and the new Alphaville store on Oxford Street, we have one Laura tote and t-shirt to give away. To be in the running, just answer the following question.
This week's question:
Laura Palmer was killed by:
a) a malevolent entity named BOB
b) Leland ‘dance with me' Palmer
c) Billy ‘my cars, they shift themselves' Brown
d) asphyxiation

TwoThousand is a weekly snapshot of Sydney's subculture, fired byemail into the loving arms of people who realise that the best things in life are often hard to find. It is compiled by an amorphous gaggle of writers, stylists, designers and photographers who all like huddling under that big umbrella we like to call creativity. Without editorial independence TwoThousand has nothing. All editorial you read is featured because it's worth it - not because it's paid for.
ADVERTISING PARTNERSHIPS
