WEDNESDAY 2 JULY
While we were penning the intro for this week's guest editor, Tristan Blair, a friend put forward a valid question: "How, exactly, does a guy from the Perth hills get into ladies' heels?" It's an interesting one. Blair don't seem like the type to indulge in female footwear. He doesn't wear fruity hats or throw his hands dramatically in conversation. He swims at the beach, eats fries, that kind of thing.
The heel inspiration stems partially from Japanese street magazines. Not, however, the perfect-bound publications overflowing bookstores, but rags air-mailed from a friend OS (with some dried shrimp and loose fish flakes thrown in for good measure).
The construction process is another starting point. As a kid, Tristan would weld in his dad's Perth factory, manipulating objects and materials into finished forms; a methodology he applies to each shoe. Currently, Tristan is shifting this process from the sole to other material forms, working on new label Es Trella with girlfriend Sarah King. He's also dabbling in degustation, psychedelic heaviness and living off the land.

In 1973, French writer Tony Duvert conducted a close reading of a series of children's sex manuals with the aim of revealing how the ‘sex-positive' culture of the 1960s had been officially rerouted into promoting the nuclear family. Perhaps because of his passionate belief in the integrity of unpoliced sex and pleasure and the contention that sex education retards what might otherwise be naturally developed sexual behaviour and attitudes, GOOD SEX ILLUSTRATED was met with controversy.
Bruce Benderson's English translation of the text, published last November by Semiotext(e) - who will follow this publication with Duvert's novel JOURNAL D'UN INNOCENT - is a must for all cultural studies students or anyone interested in examining the machinations of Western capitalism. Black and white and pink all over, this edition of GOOD SEX ILLUSTRATED is well worthy of your bookcase (which is a great place for it, because reading it on the train might attract some unwanted attention).

Nestled amongst a bakery, newsagent and several boarded-up shop fronts is arguably Australia's best anthology of out-of-print and collectible books. Co-owner Anne prefers to call the shop a 'storage facility' rather than a retail store, explaining that 90 percent of sales are made online from local and international customers. Rows and rows of hard-covered, embossed and beautifully bound books line the shelves in categories from antiques to history and of course, the arts.
It seems the reason some books go out of print is not due to a lack of interest, but the amalgamation of publishers and the downgrade in textiles used in production. Much of the stock is not as the name suggests, 'out of print', just no longer printed in the handicraft of yesteryear. Paperbacks have replaced hard covers and staples have replaced binding, meaning original copies of constantly reproduced classics now have antique status.
Anne's greatest fear is that reading is going out of fashion, but I assured her it wasn't on the premise that TwoThousand is fashionable and that you would read this story.

FROM PIERRE HUYGHE 'STREAMSIDE DAY', (2005)
Hidden amidst the first floor at the MCA, on a small patch of wall towards the back, there is a poster. Compared to the cobra-filled cotton fields and hammocked rooms of the Biennale showcase, it's a small player. Yet this petit paper alludes to something much greater.
Pierre Huyghe's poster is a calling card to a forest of sorts, one that will materialise this Wednesday on the stage, in the stalls and the circles of the Sydney Opera House. It's to be a valley obscured by clouds, a maze and internal jungle through which an eerie voice is our lone guide. Although we don't know exactly what to expect, if Huyghe's past work, such as LES GRANDS ENSEMBLES (which won him the Guggenheim's 2002 Hugo Boss Prize) and excerpts from his films and exhibitions are anything to go by; this will be worth the sacrificed lunch break.

This is another one of those cooking shows that I seem to be addicted to at the moment. There is something mind-numbing about watching cooking, leaving plenty of time to entertain the other side of the brain with any computer heating up your region.
The show is about Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, a British chef who spent a brief period as a sous-chef at River Café but was made redundant for "being messy" and "lacking discipline". He subsequently moved to a small farm/cottage in West Dorset (Britain) to become self-sufficient and live off the land. A real interesting watch for anyone interested organic living. Not for the vegetarian.

There is nothing more regal or romantic than a wax sealed letter. Jane Austen tried countless times to come up with the literary equivalent, and despite coming close even she couldn't quite match it. They say wax seals are as old as writing itself, apparently they were used by the Pharaohs to keep correspondence top secret.
Perhaps if Austen had melted a burgundy wax stick over a piece of paper before embossing it with a traditional cursive or Times, then her love would have been requited, thus sparing many a high school student's valuable time.

Degustation is an amazing way to eat. It holds my short attention span and keeps both mind and tastebuds interested. However, there is a certain amount of prep involved to commit to a degustation. For one, it takes a strong mind to pass up on lunch or an arvo snack. You have to commit to it and prepare to indulge. I suggest a large bottle of cold water and a full pack of mints. This helps ride out the stomach groaning moments when you feel like throwing in the towel.
With all this preparation, you will definitely walk out of the experience satisfied. I suggest the ten-course with the cheese platter and sherry to finish.

This is not so much a destination, but a place that everyone's mind should be straying at least once a day with our current position in the world. Anyone devoting their life to a cause makes an interesting subject for me personally. And Aleshia Caruso is a highly dedicated conservation solider.
EXTINCTION SUCKS is a documentary-style insight into her plight for a fair life for a lot of endangered animals. I have been fortunate enough to see the pilot for this series and it's, intentionally, not another boring documentary on 'how to save the world and why you should not sleep straight in your bed at night'. Aleisha's alter eco approach, and true-to-life character, draw you in unconsciously. Watch out for this one as it's sure to become a really important series.

Jimmy Sing and his gang (Spruce Lee and Hana Shimada) from the record store have started a late night danceteria, which a quick trip to a rather large search engine reveals isn't related to where you buy your lunch at school. It is however a club in New York that Madonna and LL Cool J went to before they were famous*, so if you go you could be the next big thing for the next three decades. All you need to do is like music, turn up in blue jeans and a white tee or white jeans and blue tee. How easy is that? - GK

Underbelly is definitely a new experience for the Sydney art scene. Exhibitions are usually set up in secret, during daylight hours, and then a night is picked when the public can rock up. Beer is consumed, people socialise and bitch about who looks more fashionable, and nothing is bought. With Underbelly though, the experience is much more interactive for the artist and the audience. First there is the Public Arts Lab, where all 200 artists build, create, experiment and develop their projects over a week. During this time, us average joes are invited to watch, tour, participate and interact with the artists and their work. Then there is the Festival, a ticketed event, which officially showcases the work achieved by all 200 artists over the following weekend. There will be interactive exhibitions featuring live and electronic music, puppetry, installations, video and sound production, sculpture, projection and theatre. It's a veritable artistic smorgasbord, with something for everybody. Lets hope that the continuing support for Underbelly will carry it over the following years. - DW

Let's face it, most people are selfish. We take a lot of things for granted, whether it's our job, our friends, our parents, or where we live. We look out for number one, and that's about it. This is why, when you come across someone like Paul Moulds, Captain of the Oasis Youth Support Network, it makes you reflect on how lucky the majority of us are. Paul's dedication to the kids of Oasis is documented, over two years, in the documentary, appropriately titled, THE OASIS, which recently appeared on ABC TV. Some of the incidents that occur over the course of the documentary include trying to stop kids from burning down the building, visiting a maximum security jail, dealing with a meth-induced psychotic episode, and taking a ride with the Salvos Outreach van into the red-light district of the Cross. After watching the film, it made a friend of ours quit her job and go back to Uni, where she's now studying to be a social worker. Powerful stuff. - DW

Spring, sweet spring. It's a time when one emerges from a pizza-boxed cocoon, to bare their beige in the unfamiliar sun and sneeze from the unrelenting pollen. It's about being outdoors, in the sun. It's also about camping at The Great Escape. Sydney's answer to the amphitheatres of Meredith and Golden Plains is set to be staged over the October long weekend at Newington Armoury. This year's line up will have you stockpiling the Claratyne in anticipation. Hipster mystics Yeasayer, Black Francis from The Pixies, C.W Stoneking, Ladytron, We Are Scientists, The New Pornographers and Joan as Policewoman. Sneezing yet? Tickets go on sale July 9 and include camping. All you need to do is get there and hook up some kind of tent. Try your luck and win a double pass below.
This week's question:
What's the best way to stop a fit of sneezes?
a) Slap yourself
b) Stop looking at the sun
c) Get laid
d) Drink a coffee while standing on your head

TwoThousand is a weekly snapshot of Sydney's subculture, fired byemail into the loving arms of people who realise that the best things in life are often hard to find. It is compiled by an amorphous gaggle of writers, stylists, designers and photographers who all like huddling under that big umbrella we like to call creativity. Without editorial independence TwoThousand has nothing. All editorial you read is featured because it's worth it - not because it's paid for.
ADVERTISING PARTNERSHIPS
