WEDNESDAY 23 JULY

To counter the mid-winter slump, we've been busier of late on the TwoThousand site.

First off, we're uploading new content every day. BBC World might be a smarty homepage, but does it wear 3D glasses? No? There you go.

We've also embarked on ‘the single greatest music project ever attempted by the Thousands'. Bigger than Bananarama is The Mixtape. Up now there's a sweet ‘Koo Kooo Ka Shoegaze' mix and each week we'll devote space to other, wonderfully obscure, genres.

Dragging one’s ass off the couch can be a painful necessity for cinema fans. IMAX ain’t IMAX on a 30 inch screen. Plus, at premiers you can get free cokes and your picture taken with Totty Goldsmith. Notwithstanding these intrusions, a proper tortured film-buff existence is better lived out in the lounge room.

Our friends at Siren Visual have released a little guide outlining their particularly bizarre and awesome porn-meets-samurai-meets-nerd catalogue.

Apart from demonstrating the potential of DVD to enrich your lazy ass, it contains a festival lover’s guide to Australia, authored by FILMINK MAGAZINE and a rare foray into print by the TwoThousand team.

Turn down that red carpet invite for once, and sit upon the intellectual highground (and a beanbag) in the company of JISOE, Alejandro and ICHI THE KILLER.

What band could pull off an album with this stupid name and a really corny intergalactic "concept", complete with airline steward voice-overs and swooshing flight sound effects?

Not so surprisingly, the Dandies can.

There's something about The Dandy Warhols' self-effacing nature, sense of humor and lack of affectation you just have to love. EARTH TO THE DANDY WARHOLS is a return to form, bringing back all the dirgey space rock and alt-pop they did so well early on, and also incorporating the Bowiesque funk of the last two releases (without the synthesisers, thankfully).

It's a good variety and a solid album. And its indie rock that doesn't take itself too seriously - which we could all use a good dose of now and again...

The original Deus in Camperdown has long been the ultimate male shopping-destination-come-café. Nothing evokes contemporary masculinity more than sipping on a latte surrounded by motorcycles, bicycles and leather. How appropriate then, that the team at Deus HQ have set up shop in the middle of Oxford Street.

Less floor space means that there's a smaller selection of the custom racers and fixies that have made the Deus name famous. The Deus clothing range is also on the shelves but only for the men at this stage (we've been assured they'll be stocking numbers for the ladies when the store officially launches come September). Until then, it's just blokes and bikes; if you want a flat white you'll need to BYO.

When local set and costume designer Jennie Tate died of cancer at the end of last year, she was in her prime. She'd finished a number of production designs, had received funding for a film and several other projects; and was about to finish her thesis on Japanese design and mythology.

A collection of her costume sketches from the 1960s up to her final days is currently up at Sydney Theatre's Warf Gallery. Accompanied by production photographs and tributes from people in the industry, this is evidence that the woman was destined for a illustrious career in haute couture.

It's always worth a jaunt to Walsh Bay (especially now that the orange back-packed brigade have kindly vacated). While you're down there, be sure to also check out Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller's amazing 100-speaker sound installation at Pier 2/3.

Every Tuesday, Darlo Bar's projected wall gives alcoholics opportunity to experience defining moments in cinematic history. Beneath the flickering heaters on the open-air roof, well-curated cinematic stalwarts provide an interesting spin on the traditional cinemateque.

This event is for the free-film crowd; sweetened by free popcorn and not-so-expensive beer. The line up thus far has been one for the ages; BONNIE AND CLYDE (1967), MANHATTAN (1979) and WITHNAIL & I (1987). Next up is Michael Anderson's ‘70s Sci-Fi spectacular LOGAN'S RUN (1976). Set in the 23rd Century, it's time to enter a ‘perfect world of total pleasure', not bad for a Tuesday eh?

RB: Can we write a 3D review within a 2D template?

NS: We aren't writing in 3D. We're just reviewing the 3D experience, in 2D...hmm.

RB: But will people be able to get a feel for the experience? I mean, reading this now, everyone is probably going "ho hum". But if they were wearing the glasses and I was writing this on a 3D drawing pad, they would be like "HOLY CRAP! HE'S WRITING IN 3D!!!!".

NS: But what if you're colour blind? Can you still wear 3D glasses?

RB: I believe you can. The lenses filter out the light reaching each eye, so it does not matter what color the viewer perceives once the light gets to the eye.

NS: Did you just google that?

RB: Yes.

There are only two types of people in this world: people who like tapas and idiots. So we went to Bodega - one of a handful of exemplary tapas joints in Surry Hills that keep Sydney's inner city sophisticates well fed and indulged. If words could do any justice to good food we would write about it in exquisite detail. But the reality is we can't come close to describing an amazing empanada... in fact we can only just spell it. What this means for you in real terms is that you need to live the dream and visit Bodega yourself. The brave can try ox tongue and the sissies can stick to tortilla.

While words fail us in describing food, let us attempt to make vivid some other aspects of Bodega. The décor is well considered and if you can get a side bench/cushion you should... by your last mouthful you will need to slump. The wine list has a continental feel and the staff have the smarts to match the right food to your bottle. And damn it the wait staff are also so very nice we could die.

How do you like them adjectives?

Wandering between tombstones on a wintery Sunday sounds like a beautiful scene out of a classic English novel...or a contrived clip from a bad teen cult film.

St Stephens grounds are definitely more quaint than queer, despite lying streets back from King Street.

Now I'm sure you're all religioned-out after Pope week, but this tour is 100% prayer free - and popular with more than just pilgrims and grannies. You'll get a rhetoric history of the graveyard as well as background on those who lie beneath...

If you're a spiritual type or a GOOSEBUMPS fan, you might even be lucky enough to sense a ‘presence'. If not, just take your jacket off and let the wind whip up the hairs on your arms.

An educational activity in a churchyard without religion or any smell of Sunday school? God send.

Whilst some Sydney clubs play host to real outlaws, Bandits nights are more about public drunkenness, occasional nudity, and, according to the Bandits mantra, "forgetting how you got home". This Friday sees Bandits stalwarts Spruce Lee, Dan De Caires and Kato celebrate their entry into the terrible twos. They've flown up regular guest from Melbourne (and current Bumblebeez drummer) Ooh-Ee, so when you're munting out at 4am, you'll be listening to the kind of uplifting synthy disco which makes you wonder why you've wasted so many hours of your life doing anything but dancing. Yes, what a fool you've been. There's also a dress up theme to get you feeling extra festive - tonight they've changed it from ‘Scenester' to ‘Dress to party'. - JG
