Why aren't more horror films set in Australia? We've got a whole continent of eerie, isolated landscapes and our fair share of psychopaths too. Hell, a bunch of us are even descended from criminals - all compelling fodder for a film. Well, now we can breathe a sigh of relief, and then suck it straight back in with horror, as all of these elements are brought together.

Like an old wine...well, you know the rest. You Am I return to Aussie shores and start their tour with material from their new album, Dilettantes. The boys have been responsible for receiving nine more arias than Bec Cartwright, creating an epic eight records to date, and producing countless songs which have served as a soundtrack to the local music scene over the last 20 years.

Ah, new things. Babies. Haircuts. Sarah Palin jokes. So superior to old things, like floppy disks and elderly people. At New Theatre this month you can indulge this passion for all things fresh off the block with a season of new Australian writing from emerging and established writers. Theatre gems including Hillary Bell, Nick Parsons, and Noelle Janaczewska dish up pieces ranging from monologues, short plays and surrealist farce to cabaret comedy, in a project to celebrate and nurture new local work and theatre workers.

It's ironic that some of the most recognisable faces in NOT QUITE HOLLYWOOD are American. Why does Quentin Tarantino know more about Australian genre cinema than we do? A nationwide awkwardness about our own film history has distracted us from this stash of glittery fool's gold for far too long.
This Melbourne-produced celebration of the glory days of '70s and '80s Australian trash film captures the devil-may-care gleefulness of its subject matter.

The Edgertons are Australia's answer to the Sheen family. They have all the star power of the famous US siblings, without the history of dubious sitcoms (TWO AND A HALF MEN...anyone?). See Nash Edgerton's directorial debut (he's already an established stuntman and actor) THE SQUARE, starring his brother Joel.

It's no Cannes, but now that's over Erskineville hosts its version (actually Newtown's version) of the much-hyped film event. Now in its third year, Newtown Flicks incorporates eight screening sessions of short Australian films arranged into categories loosely based on genre or themes.
I must confess that whenever something like this comes up, the lefty academic in me jumps on its free-trade soapbox and starts an internal rant about the import of fostering a strong national film industry.
