It's also during these times that Proper's free monthly hip hop parties provide a much-needed social life saviour.

The mid 90's saw many great couplings - Brenda and Dylan, the midriff top with high waisted jeans and, outshining all of these... Blackalicious. Meeting in high school the duo later teamed up in LA and started making the sweet beats and informed lyrics we know them for today. On the bill you'll also find local hip hop oufits Spit Syndicate, Horrorshow and Peace Out.

Wolves and Wishes, Dosh

11th Sep 08
Release: Album
To Cure: A broken heart

Naive opinion brands Dosh as white-boyexperimental hip hop just because he sits on the Anticon roster. Sure, there are percussive leanings towards the genre on WOLVES AND WISHES (evident through air-tight breaks) but beyond thisthere's instrumental mastery and a nerd-like splicing together of encyclopaedicmusic knowledge and composition.

You need to get down to Paddy's Markets, and purchase some fake Wu-wear STAT. This Friday night, Spectrum kicks the punk-rockers to the curb to make room for a whole heap of B.I.G ballers. To Cure: A predictable playlist

I'm so white. And gay.

So it will sound pretty ludicrous when I tell you about the dope beats and mad flow this Chicago duo gots. But from their name alone, you know The Cool Kids are that new hip-hop act all us discerning listeners have been dreaming about: one you can love without a hint of irony.

Friday nights are rarely a free affair, but that's not the only reason you should go to Proper 10. Now in its 10th month (oh really?) the regular hip hop Wednesday has moved to Friday. One of the best showcases of freestyle rap and hip hop around, this week is a national affair. D'Opus & Ro Sham Bo (ACT), A-Love (VIC) plus locals Mas-siva and Mailer Peach.

Hip to the hop and then don't stop at the Annandale tonight as Reverse Polarities, Natural Causes, Rapaport and True Vibe Nation bring some Aussie flair to the stage. As if that wasn't appealing enough, all proceeds from the night go to Oxfam. Who says a night out and social responsibility are mutually exclusive? -JG
