"It's like if Thailand made a pasta sauce." This was by way of a compliment, perhaps abstracted, so enamoured was a drinking companion of the Bloody Mary at Bloodwood. I tried it: it was incredible, and I'm not usually a huge fan of the drink. So, while she writhed and poured forth proclamations of love for the cocktail artist behind the concoction, we got stuck into some food and wine.
What:
High Reflections presents Tim Hecker
Who:
Tim Hecker, Peter Newman, Alex White
Where:
The Sandringham Hotel, 387 King St, Newtown
When:
Fri Mar 5, 8pm
How much:
$12
Description:
When describing Tim Hecker's music, the best thing to do is make geographical analogies. Talk of "tectonic colour plates" and "notes and chords, like fissures in the earth" is fitting when related to an album called Imaginary Country. Plus, he's from Montreal known for its series of interconnected city tunnels, and that means he's one step closer to the earth's core than you or I.

Zoe McMahon's is an instinctual approach to photography. She doesn't plan, she waits and she looks and she travels. And every so often she finds a space that feels familiar, a space that induces tenderness, a space that speaks, and she doesn't photograph it so much as have a brief, heart wrenching affair with it.
When you think about it, it's kind of bizarre that King Street has so few legitimate bars. The plethora of restaurants is a given, there's a wealth of middling-to-good cafes, some reasonable pubs, but an absolute dearth of any cosy bars - with the possible exceptions of Madame Fling Flong and maaaaybe Kuleto's.
Your favourite dough dealer just got better. They were already frisbeeing crispy bases to hungry mouths from their stores all over town, and now Newtown invites you upstairs to a dedicated pizza party room. Sure, you've done that at Pizza Hut when you were, like, eight. But, they've sweetened the deal further with a record player and the call to bring your own vinyl.

Luxe is a bakery and cafe brimming with enthusiasm. They're dying to tell you about their place, the bread they bake and the pickles and jams they make. And while they're good to listen to, you may just want to eat, as the food speaks for itself.
An heirloom tomato salad tells a tale of lost arts and forgotten seeds, the revival of a time when tomatoes tasted so good they were eaten straight from the hand (yes, like an apple).
