Describing music is, almost inevitably, a frustrating series of inadequate analogies. In the case of SONGS, my grey matter latched onto the following: Punk lilt and guitar-driven melodies that recall IS THIS IT-era Strokes. Vocals that channel a stripped-back Velvet Underground; driving rhythms that might have been picked up off the floor after The Wrens finished THE MEADOWLANDS; Constrained, Stooges-like brevity in a four-track EP.

This record is a jigsaw. A Rubick's cube. As soon as you enter this musical labyrinth you're lost in the shadows. Caught up in a running stream of repeating refrains and echoing hooks as the record circles in on itself like a snake eating its own tail (Dear, infinity symbol).
But really, who wants to keep tabs on the real world when such an escape is on offer.

These New Puritans emerged from the soil of the English seaside resort, Southend, in 2006.
In person, they cut a striking silhouette: svelte, clean-cut, stoic and unassuming-like, but once they push, pluck and bang at their instruments - what a fresh hell they unleash!
Urgent, albeit impassive, voices are juxtaposed with jarring guitar and meticulously synced drums.
