Piquant is a word of varying definition. On one hand, it's ‘appealingly provocative' and ‘charming'. On the other, ‘stinging' and ‘pungent in taste'. So exactly where do the 'piquant' works of David Withers and Lachlan Anthony lie? Frankly, it's a broad spectrum. In Anthony's photography and Withers' installations, inanimate cloth appears to move, trashcans jump and tissue boxes shudder.

Underbelly is definitely a new experience for the Sydney art scene. Exhibitions are usually set up in secret, during daylight hours, and then a night is picked when the public can rock up. Beer is consumed, people socialise and bitch about who looks more fashionable, and nothing is bought. With Underbelly though, the experience is much more interactive for the artist and the audience.

From the personal relationships forged on the streets of New York to the documents of Japanese cultural teleology and the vast cityscapes of the megalopolis that is Sao Paulo we are forced to acknowledge wider notions of how we experience people and their place.

I once went to a church in Orange County, California, with a drive-through Sunday service. Here, all the cheeseburger and root-beer-float guzzling folk could get their Communion, hear the day's scripture and make their weekly donations without leaving the SUV. Genius!

In Oz however, we prefer our churches without the drive-through window and occasionally, with video art.
