At New Theatre this month you can indulge this passion for all things fresh off the block with a season of new Australian writing from emerging and established writers. Theatre gems including Hillary Bell, Nick Parsons, and Noelle Janaczewska dish up pieces ranging from monologues, short plays and surrealist farce to cabaret comedy, in a project to celebrate and nurture new local work and theatre workers.

Even at 11pm and one show down, Daniel Kitson is on fire. Partnered with the lungs of Gavin Osborn, Kitson's storytelling prowess and rapid-fire words tell the frequently hilarious story of two fellas on a crowded train touching on epic love, warring village idiots and numerous flapjacks. It's late for sure, but it also makes for a wonderful, hour-long bedtime story.

Black Watch
Any play which opens a national parliament must be worth its weight in reputation, and that is what BLACK WATCH did recently when it was chosen to open Scottish parliament. It's hard to imagine a play kicking off Canberra, but the fierce nationalist pride that the newly formed National Theatre of Scotland seems to be reflected in this its most successful touring theatre piece.
