Editor Alice Gage once wanted to rock some serious boats. She was filled with rage at the numbness around her and thought that a cutting political publication would liven things up a little. After a good, hard think she realised the planet doesn't need more political verbiage - but it does need some interesting shit. A year later the first issue of AMPERSAND, reminiscent of a weathered PENGUIN CLASSIC, is poised humbly among fellow rags on shelves.
This curiosity journal is a collection of essays, ideas, accounts of history and art. There's erotic fiction about Margaret Pomeranz's lust for David...while in more palatable pages, Gareth Liddard (THE DRONES) responds to a question from the Oxford Men's Colleges Entrance Exam Questions where he asks why we breed ugly idiots instead of smart sexy people.
Chris Flynn's critical article on creative Australia sounds worryingly defensive of AMPERSAND as a whole, but he hits a nerve: "it's what we do that lasts, the culture we create that leaves a trail for others to pick up and understand who we were." Let's get on with making those smart sexy people.
Expect to rub shoulders with Eddie Sharp the creator of EROTIC FAN FICTION, Adam Jasper and Eden Falk at this launch. Note to the hungry: The Falconer are even catering this fine occasion.
