Flare: An exhibition celebrating the life and work of Jennie Tate
When local set and costume designer Jennie Tate died of cancer at the end of last year, she was in her prime. She'd finished a number of production designs, had received funding for a film and several other projects; and was about to finish her thesis on Japanese design and mythology.
A collection of her costume sketches from the 1960s up to her final days is currently up at Sydney Theatre's Warf Gallery.
Studio 20/17
Amidst the concrete corridors and lucid glass laneways of the ‘2 Dank Street' institution, many a stimulating thing may be found. Here, is a newly-opened, suitably-named homage to Waterloo's postcode, Studio 20/17. The hidden cache, merging gallery with workshop, houses contemporary objects alongside obscure and ornate forms of jewellery.

There's a lot more than metal at this year's PROFILE, the biennial award exhibition of selected works from members of the NSW Jewellers and Metalsmiths Group of Australia - on show until this weekend at the lovely HORUS & DELORIS gallery.
Ruban Rat
There's nothing wrong with the matchbox car per se, but it doesn't quite have the design aesthetic of the vinyl toy. Which leads me to wonder how children in Japan, spiritual home of the vinyl toy, played when they were little. While we were pushing our cars around an especially made mat making "vroom" sounds they were probably having imaginary intergalactic wars with stylised mythical creatures.
GAS 07
During the 1980’s break-dance culture craze, graffiti wars took over the subway trains and streets of Brooklyn and the Lower East Side. The Rock Steady Crew was at the eye of the storm and thanks to GAS'07, they are representing right here, right now, in Sydney.

Hey, you! Yes you, Mr Font Nerd. Look at you sitting there scratching a fantabulous new treatment for the letter ‘T' on your notepad. Maybe you're scouring typographica.org for a scandalously hot typeface right now. Or perhaps you're silently scoffing at the readability of a business card that employed an inscrutable serif font over a gaudy background.
