Is there anything Emily Hunt and Raquel Welch cannot do? As the creative duo behind DUKE MAGAZINE (they write, design, model in and publish the disturbingly clever pop-culture rag) they’ve usurped Tim “The Toolman” Taylor as the supreme overlords of DIY. And to top it off, last week Emily Hunt unveiled her first solo art show at First Draft Gallery in Slurry.
Like an ocker Quentin Blake, Emily’s noodling illustrations are random, grotesque and totally compelling. In 'Jeanne In The Middle', Australia’s first dame of drag frolics between a jester, king, monk and tax collector from the middle ages. In another work a motley bunch of Egyptian gods wreak vengeance on Napoleon after he blows off the Sphinx's beak. To break things up, the show also features a collection of absurd comics with sub-titles from Raquel.
Extreme radness is always one step from extreme wackness, and in this exhibition the Duke girls milk that truth for all it’s worth. Nice one, ladies.
