Alongside pretzels, Bauhaus, some of the world's best death metal and Claudia Schiffer, Rainer Werner Fassbinder's films are amongst Germany's top exports.
In a career that lasted less than 15 years, the radical perfectionist created 35 feature-length films, three short films, two television series, 24 stage plays and four radio plays; and did 36 acting roles in his own and other's films.
His phenomenal creative energy and intense discipline when working were in contrast to the scandalous, self-destructive libertinism of his personal life, and his death from a drug-overdose at 37 is often considered to mark the end of the New German Cinema period.
On the 25th anniversary of his death, the lovely guys at the Goethe-Institut in Woollahra are presenting an exhibition of Fassbinder's film posters, and are putting on free screenings of his films every Wednesday for seven weeks, starting tonight with his adaptation of Fontane's famous novel, Effi Briest.
